An animal cage having a rectangular main body with a bottom, top and sidewalls defining a first inner space for the animals. A first sidewall of the main body includes a first opening to allow access into the first inner space. Attached to the cage is a secondary rectangular body having a bottom, upper and sidewalls defining a second inner space. First and second sidewalls of the secondary body respectively include second and third openings, the second opening being parallel and aligned with the first opening, and the third opening being formed orthogonal to the first and second openings. The first sidewall of the main body includes a rotatable gate that is switchable between a first position which closes the first opening, and a second position which clears the first and second openings while rotated into the second inner space and closes the third opening of the secondary body.

A laboratory animal cage including a basin and a removable hood positioned which define an inner space that is closed and not accessible from the outside. The basin includes a flat bottom wall and sidewalls joined thereto, which define a first support edge. The hood is tray-shaped to define a second engagement edge and includes a main cover wall. Positioning the hood over the basin prevents the inner space from being accessed via the opposing first support edge and second engagement edge. With the bottom of the basin positioned on a support plane, the maximum distance between the first support edge and the support plane is 110 mm or less. Additionally, at least 50% of the inner surface of the bottom wall has a minimum height measurement to the inner surface of the hood of at least 127 mm, which is available for an animal.

The housing cage () according to the present invention allows to optimize the density of cages on a shelving rack, in terms of rows of cages, while complying with dimensional constraints in terms of minimum surface of the base which can be treaded on by the animals and minimum inner height of the cage. Furthermore, the cage according to the present invention comprises environmental enrichment devices () for the animals integrated in the base ().

In particular, the system is composed of a shelf comprising a plurality of devices designed to detect the position in the facility and the ID of a cage, a central control unit designed to process, through software, the information received in order to offer the operator the possibility of tracking and managing, by means of a database, the whole facility. At least one of the bedding condition or the flooding condition is measured based on a rate of one or more changes of one of a resistance or an impedance of said material between said electrodes.
