Various embodiments include a cylindrical brush mounted on a frame supported by a set of wheels positioned behind the brush. A tow bar connects the frame to a tow vehicle. The amount of pressure between the brush and the ground is controllable. The brush rotation is driven by an electric motor. In one embodiment, the brush axis is not orthogonal to the direction of motion, and debris gets pushed to the side as the sweeper moves forward. In another embodiment, the brush axis is orthogonal to the direction of motion and the debris is driven around the brush by a wrap-around guide, into a hopper sitting on the frame behind the brush.

Methods and apparatus are provided for specifying media in cluster printing systems that include printers that use device-specific media selection techniques, such as paper catalogs, media tray pulldown menus and media attribute pulldown menus. A universal media selector is provided that includes a universal paper catalog, an editor, a paper catalog translator and a tray associator. The universal paper catalog is a two-dimensional array that includes one or more entries that associate a media label with corresponding media attributes. The editor may be used to create, import, export and edit paper catalog entries in the universal paper catalog. The paper catalog translator is a two-dimensional array that may be used to translate attribute labels and associated values in the universal paper catalog to corresponding attribute names and associated values used in device-specific paper catalogs of printers included in the cluster printing system. The tray associator is a two-dimensional array that associates paper catalog entries in the universal paper catalog to device-specific media trays (and optionally other media attributes) of printers included in the cluster printing system.

A technique for printing black text on a colored background, in which the graphics are broken down into three categories: text, polygons (also referred to as line drawing or vectors), and images (also referred to as bitmaps or raster data) when the incoming graphic information is a Page Description Language (PDL) data file (e.g. Adobe Postscript-PS- or Hewlett-Packard PCL). If the object is not a text object, it is processed in a normal manner. If the object is a text object, a determination is made if the color of the object is black. If the object is not a black text object, it is processed in a normal manner. If the object is a black text object, special processing and rasterization techniques are applied. Thus, the invention exploits to advantage the fact that it is possible in most PDL instances to treat black text differently from other black objects.
