A computer implemented method of determining spot positioning for each field associated with a planning target volume (TV) is disclosed. The method includes accessing said dose volume constraints and information associated with a TV structure and associated organs at risk (OAR) structure. The method further includes determining a density map for each structure. Also, the method includes using a minimum number of Monitor Units (MU) per spot constraint, computing a minimum distance between spots for a portion of a field that overlaps with the TV structure and a portion of the field that overlaps with the OAR structure. The method further includes applying a rendering process to convert the density map for each of the portions into a set of points. Using the set of points and the minimum distance between spots computed, the method includes determining a spot map for each of the portions.

Systems and methods for proton therapy treatment planning can include a treatment planning system determining positions of a plurality of energy layers across a dimension of a planning target volume (PTV) along a proton field direction, such that each pair of consecutive energy layers are spaced by a distance that is proportional to a width of a Bragg peak corresponding to at least one energy layer of the pair of energy layers. The treatment planning system can generate a proton therapy plan for irradiating the PTV according to the sequence of energy layers.

A system includes at least one processor configured to execute computer executable instructions to cause the system to: generate or obtain a first radiation treatment plan for a treatment target in a patient, the first radiation treatment plan prescribing beam characteristics for a plurality of beamlets or spots in the treatment target, the beam characteristics including a monitor unit value associated with each of the plurality of beamlets or spots in at least a first field; and display, via a graphical user interface, at least one representation of a first distribution of monitor units for the first radiation treatment plan, the at least one representation of the first distribution of monitor units indicating, for each respective monitor unit value, a number of beamlets or spots in at least the first field having the respective monitor unit value.

A control circuit accesses information representing radiation dose deposition as a function of time for a particular patient as well as at least one biological parameter for that particular patient. The control circuit then determines a biological equivalent dose for the particular patient as a function of both the information representing radiation dose deposition as a function of time and the at least one biological parameter to provide a determined biological equivalent dose for the particular patient.
