Process and plant for protecting water pipeworks from corrosion

Tuyere for the processing of metals in the liquid, solid or pasty state, and capable of introducing simultaneously and separately a gas and a powdered material. The tuyere comprises at least two well-centered concentric tubes, the gas being introduced into a non-external tube, and the powdered and compressed material being introduced into another tube, which is lubricated on its inner wall by a film of a lubricating substance introduced through a slot formed therein. The outer tube is traversed by an agent protecting the tuyere against its hot wear.

The present invention concerns a method of introducing refining gas and stirring gas into metal refining converters, and more particularly into converters in steelworks. To achieve this, the subject of the present invention is a method of blowing oxidizing gases, particularly pure oxygen, to refine metals, and more particularly to refine pig iron into steel, in a converter, by means on the one hand of a lance blowing from top to bottom, and on the other hand by protected tuyeres blowing, vertically or obliquely, from bottom to top, and characterized in that the amount of oxygen blown from bottom to top by the tuyeres is between 3% and 25% of the total amount of oxygen necessary to refine the metal bath, in that this oxygen is blown from bottom to top with a practically constant flow or a decreasing flow, i.e. with a non-increasing flow, in that a stirring gas, neutral or oxidizing, whose flow is variable according to the various phases of blowing, and can even be zero at certain moments, can be added to this oxygen blown from bottom to top, and in that the jets of oxygen blown from bottom to top, whether or not mixed with a stirring gas, have a diameter at least equalling 18 millimeters, and preferably at least equalling 12 millimeters, this diameter being the jet diameter at the outlet of the tuyeres.

An improved construction for the refining gas passage of a tuyere for use in refining molten metal in a converter. The transverse section of the refining gas passage has a continuous outer enclosure and a central opening defining a plurality of radially extending branches whose total perimeter exceeds the circumference of a circle having an area equivalent to the central opening.

In a process for treating a bath of molten metal in a refractory-lined metallurgical furnace by introducing oxygen into the bath, an improved method for protecting selected portions of the refractory lining against wear. Liquid hydrocarbons are controllably injected through ports in the lining located in proximity to the aforesaid selected portions so as to direct the hydrocarbons toward the selected portions and thereby prevent corrosion by constituents of the bath.

In use of a steel converter into which oxygen is blown through tuyeres, each tuyere being protected by flow of a protective liquid containing hydrocarbons along peripheral passage means in the tuyere, the tuyeres are protected against wear by dividing the refining process into at least two stages, in the first stage which extends from the beginning of the refining process to a point at which the carbon level in the molten metal is 0.300 to 0.700% the protective liquid flows at a first rate and in the second stage which extends from the end of the first stage to a point at which at least 90% of the total amount of oxygen has been blown in, the protective liquid flows at a second rate in the range 0.08 to 0.15 liters per minute per centimeter of the mean circumference of the passage means in each tuyere, the first rate being in the range 0.4 to 0.6 times the second rate.

A rotary connector for connecting a fixed pipe to a movable pipe for fluid flow therebetween comprising a cylindrical stator having an input for supplying fluid thereto tangentially of the axis of the stator and adapted to be coupled to the fixed pipe, and a rotor rotatable about the axis of said stator and having an output extending in a direction perpendicular to the plane of said tangential input and connectable to the movable pipe, the rotor comprising a plurality of demountable parts. The rotor may comprise two main body parts which are received within the stator and abut oppositely directed shoulders on the stator, the parts having opposed spaced faces between which the inlet opens and which are shaped to direct the fluid axially into the outlet in one of the parts, the two parts being releasably fixed together.

A blast pipe is formed of a plurality of concentric tubes, the cross-sections of which are designed for the fluid flows required for the refining of a metal bath, which are used initially as a burner. A second tube adjacent an outermost tube, projects beyond the end of the outermost tube, and is provided with a row of orifices in the projecting portion. The end of the second tube is closed by a metal cap soldered to the second tube with a hard solder which melts at a predetermined temperature in relation to the metal of the bath to be refined.

In a method of deoxidizing and/or carburizing a metal, particularly steel, bath using an immersed nozzle consisting of two concentric tubes, the central tube of the nozzle is fed with an oxidizing gas during the or each oxidation phase, then with a scavenging gas, then with a neutral gas carrying carbon powder or powder containing carbon during the or each deoxidation or carburization phase and finally with a scavenging gas, the outer tube of the nozzle being fed with a protective fluid or different protective fluids during both the oxidation and deoxidation or carburization phases.
