The subject of the invention is an ignition coil, of the type intended to be mounted on a spark plug for the individual electrical supply of this spark plug, comprising an internal secondary winding ( ), an external primary winding, a flux return shell ( ) and a casing ( ). According to the invention, the said casing ( ) surrounds only the secondary winding, the primary winding being wound onto the casing, on the outside of the latter; and being itself surrounded by the flux return shell.

A secondary winding bobbin of an ignition coil for an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The bobbin includes tubular winding core and a plurality of fins substantially perpendicular to the axis of the core. The fins defining between them annular winding compartments of which the core forms the bottom. Each fin including a passage to allow the secondary winding wire to pass, in the winding direction, from the compartment located upstream of this fin to the compartment located downstream. The core has a shape such that the passage opens into the upstream compartment at a distance (e) from the bottom of the core and into the downstream compartment level with the core.

A method and assembly for installing a plurality of ignition coils (12) on an engine block. The invention includes molding a housing (1) from an electrically insulating material. The housing having a plurality of receptacles (4) for the coils and including inserts for attachment of the housing to the engine block. The coils are placed in receptacles with appropriate wiring, and the connections (23, 24) of the receptacles are connected to the primary and secondary windings of the coils. When all connections are made, an electrically insulating resin (25) is poured into the housing which embeds the coils and their cable connections. An ignition coil has a high tension winding divided into sections, each of which is wound in one of a plurality of winding compartments formed in an insulating body and which are spaced apart from each other by insulating compartments. The high tension or secondary sub-assembly is impregnated with an adhesive varnish before being encapsulated in a plastics material, the encapsulation being carried out by surface moulding.
