A method and a system for displaying images are provided. In the method, a pixel is provided that includes a layer of ferroelectric material and a layer of liquid crystal material. A first electric field is momentarily applied to the pixel to electrically polarize the ferroelectric layer to a first polarization. The first polarization is then used to maintain the liquid crystal material in a first orientation corresponding to a first apparent brightness of the pixel.

Systems and method for displaying images with reduced power consumption

Eyewear which preferentially transmits light from a liquid crystal display screen using spectral filtering, polarization filtering and/or spatial filtering. The eyewear transmits the relatively narrow red, green, and blue bands of light emitted by the display's fluorescent backlight lamp, while blocking ambient light falling outside of those relatively narrow bands of light. The eyewear can further include polarized lenses oriented at either + or &#x2212;45 degrees, matching the polarization of the liquid crystal display emission, and thus blocking ambient light not matching that polarization orientation. The glasses can also be tinted except for a central portion matching the shape of the rectangular liquid crystal display screen, and thus preferentially blocking light not originating from the liquid crystal display screen.

Eyewear for viewing liquid crystal displays

A flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) for fiber optic modules includes a board with multiple bends, forming a structure with sides and a bottom. The traces in the FPCB traverse from the opto-electronic chips, through the sides of the FPCB, to the module interconnects at the bottom. The multi-fold structure allows the FPCB to support a higher number of traces than conventional single-fold FPCB's, and it allows the fanning out of signal traces from the opto-electronic and electronic chips at the front of the fiber-optic module, thereby reducing the crosstalk between the traces. This higher number is provided with a FPCB that features a single insulating layer and without the need to criss-cross the traces, resulting in improved signal integrity over conventional multi-layer FPCB's.

An immersive display system which provides for an optical correlator for imaging a surface and generating data representative of the position or movement of the optical correlator and any object physically associated with the optical correlator. Imagery is generated and displayed on a display device in accordance with the data generated by the optical correlator.

An orthogonal electrical connector using a ball edge array includes one or more stackable fiber optic transceivers, wherein each transceiver includes an electrical substrate, and arrays of solder, which is in form of solder balls or solder paste. The solder is held in predetermined position adjacent to the electrical traces on both sides of the electrical substrate inserted into voids on the molded housing and aligned to contact the electrical traces on the motherboard. The electrical traces on the electrical substrate and the motherboard are located close enough so that the solder physically touches both parts during the soldering process. The solder is reflowed by heat, and the melted solder &ldquo;wicks up&rdquo; the electrical traces on the electrical substrate by surface tension.

An integrated and modular coupling module for coupling light between optical devices, such as an optical fiber connector and optoelectronic device, is presented. In this invention, beam-shaping elements and alignment elements are integrated on a single alignment plate in such a way that they maintain a precise physical relationship. The relative physical arrangement between the beam-shaping elements and the alignment elements are configured such that once the alignment elements are engaged with the peripheral devices, accurate optical alignment between the peripheral devices and the coupling module is also attained. The optical coupling module of the present invention enables it to withstand temperatures of 220&deg; C. or higher while maintaining its integrity and performance. The principle of the present invention can also be extended to constructing coupling modules for coupling other types of electromagnetic radiation.

Integrated coupling modules for high-bandwidth fiber-optic systems

A method for growing a crystalline layer that includes a first material on a growth surface of a crystalline substrate of a second material, wherein the first material and the second material have different lattice constants. A buried layer is generated in the substrate such that the buried layer isolates a layer of the substrate that includes the growth surface from the remainder of the substrate. The second material is then deposited on the growth surface at a growth temperature. The isolated layer of the substrate has a thickness that is less than the thickness at which defects are caused in the crystalline lattice of the first material by the second material crystallizing thereon. The buried layer is sufficiently malleable at the growth temperature to allow the deformation of the lattice of the isolated layer without deforming the remainder of the substrate. The present invention may be utilized for growing III-V semiconducting material layers on silicon substrates. In the case of silicon-based substrates, the buried layer is preferably SiO that is sufficiently malleable at the growth temperature to allow the deformation of the isolated substrate layer.

Integrated circuit substrate that accommodates lattice mismatch stress

An optical imaging assembly for imaging light from a display. The optical assembly is constructed from first and second linear polarization filters, first and second lenses that are preferably concave-convex lenses, and first and second &frac14; wave plates. The first linear polarization filter passes light polarized in a first direction, and second linear polarization filter passes light polarized in a second direction that is orthogonal to the first direction. A folded imaging assembly is constructed from the first and second lenses and the first &frac14; wave plate. The first and second lenses have partially reflecting coatings on one surface of each lens. The folded imaging assembly and the second &frac14; wave plate are located between the first and second linear polarization filters. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the first &frac14; wave plate has a birefringence axis that is orthogonal to the birefringence axis of the second &frac14; wave plate and the two &frac14; wave plates are constructed from the same material. The partially reflective coating of one of the first and second lenses preferably includes a material having a reflectivity that depends on the direction of linear polarization of light striking the reflective coating. The surfaces of the convex-concave lenses are preferably spherical. The lenses preferably provide a substantially telecentric optical imaging system.

Folded optical system adapted for head-mounted displays

An optical element constructed from a transparent support having a curved surface and a layer of a polarization-dependent film that is affixed to the curved surface. The polarization-dependent film passes linearly polarized light of a predetermined polarization while reflecting linearly polarized light having a polarization orthogonal to the predetermined polarization. The element is constructed by applying a layer of a transparent adhesive either to the layer of polarization-dependent film or to the curved surface. The support and layer of polarization-dependent film are then heated to a temperature above the temperature at which the polarization film can be deformed. The support and layer of polarization-dependent film are then pressed together so as to deform the layer of polarization-dependent film to cause the layer of polarization-dependent film to conform to the curved surface.

Polarization-dependent imaging element

A display that includes an array of reflective pixels, a linear light source; and a reflector. The reflector includes a cylindrical surface, the axis of the cylindrical surface being parallel to the linear light source. The linear light source is positioned relative to the reflector such that light from the linear light source is reflected by the reflector onto the array of reflective pixels. The reflector is constructed from a material that is partially reflecting. The linear light source preferably includes a plurality of light emitting diodes and an optical diffuser. In a color display, the light emitting diodes include diodes having different emission spectra. In one embodiment of the invention, the reflector is constructed from a material that reflects light of a first linear polarization while transmitting light having a linear polarization orthogonal to the first linear polarization. In this embodiment, each pixel in the array of reflective pixels preferably includes a polarization rotating cell that rotates the linear polarization vector of light reflected by the pixel in response to the receipt of an electrical signal by the pixel.

Thin illuminator for reflective displays

An optical collimating assembly for imaging light from a display. The optical assembly includes first and second linear polarization filters having polarization directions that are orthogonal to one another. A folded imaging assembly that includes a first beam splitter, a first &frac14; wave plate, and a second beam splitter is located between the polarization filters. A second &frac14; wave plate is also located between the polarization filters. The first &frac14; wave plate has a birefringence axis that is orthogonal to the birefringence axis of the second &frac14; wave plate. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the &frac14; wave plates are constructed from the same birefringent material. One of the reflectors is preferably constructed from a material having a reflectivity that depends on the direction of linear polarization of light striking the beam splitter.
