A gas burner, which is particularly suitable for flame treatment of substrates having large surfaces, e.g. for coating such surfaces in a combustion chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) process, includes a burner body with a gas supply connection and a nozzle plate, wherein the burner body and the nozzle plate constitute together a gas plenum and the nozzle plate constitutes a perforated wall section of the plenum. The nozzle plate includes a large number of nozzles extending from a plenum side to a flame side of the nozzle plate and it is made of a plurality of sheets which are arranged in a stack and extend substantially perpendicular or substantially parallel to the nozzle extension. The sheets include through openings, wherein the through openings of all sheets are at least partly aligned with each other, or they have a comb-like form.

Gas burner

A web of a polymer film () is coated with an oxide layer, in particular with an SiObarrier layer, by transporting the web with the aid of a rotatable drum () through a plurality of flame bands, which are directed in a radial direction from above against the circumferential surface of the drum, which extend at a distance from each other across the width of the web being supported and transported on this circumferential surface, and which are fed with a gas mixture including a combustible gas, an oxidant, and a silicon containing compound. Therein the circumferential surface of the rotatable drum is cooled to a predetermined temperature and the web is transported through the area of the tip of the inner flame region. Polymer films with barrier layers produced in the named way have at small layer thicknesses of less than 10 nm very good barrier properties.

Method and device for coating a polymer film with an oxide layer

A device for carrying out a plasma enhanced process includes, within a vacuum chamber, at least one magnetron electrode () constituting an unbalanced magnetron having a flat magnetron face () with peripheral and central magnetic poles of opposite polarities connected to a source () of alternating voltage. The device further includes a device for positioning a substrate (), the substrate having a surface to be treated facing the magnetron face (), and a gas supply device for supplying a process gas or process gas mixture to the space between the magnetron face () and the treated surface. The distance between the magnetron face () and the treated surface is adapted to the magnetic field created by the magnetron electrode () such that there is a visible plasma band running between darker tunnels formed by magnetic field lines extending between peripheral and central magnetic poles of the magnetron face () and the treated surface, the plasma band having a minimum width but having homogeneous brightness towards the treated surface.

A device for treating a web material in a continuous plasma enhanced process includes a vacuum chamber () with device () for maintaining a constant reduced pressure within the chamber () and, arranged within the chamber (), a rotating drum () for supporting and transporting the web (), a magnetron device facing the web () supported and transported by the drum () and a gas supply device for supplying a process gas or process gas mixture to the space () between the drum and the magnetron device in which space () the plasma is sustained. The magnetron device has a plurality of independent magnetron electrodes () with rectangular magnetron faces arranged beside each other in parallel. Each magnetron electrode () is individually powered with an alternating voltage by its own power supply (). The drum () is electrically grounded, floating or negatively biased.

Method for the treatment of a web-type material in a plasma-assisted process

In a process for treating a surface with the aid of a glow discharge plasma sustained in a gas of substantially ambient pressure between two electrodes (') unwanted effects of plasma filaments occurring in such a plasma are prevented by positioning the surface () to be treated in an edge region (&#x2032;) of the plasma. The surface is placed on one side of a plasma space () defined by the electrode faces (&#x2032;) beyond a pair of aligned edges (&#x2032;) of the electrode faces (&#x2032;), at a distance of a few millimeters from these edges (&#x2032;), and facing these edges (&#x2032;). The treatment gas or treatment gas mixture is fed to the plasma space () from a second side opposite the edge region (&#x2032;) in which the surface () to be treated is positioned. During treatment, a substrate () whose one surface () is to be treated is either stationary or is advanced in a direction substantially perpendicular to the electrode faces (&#x2032;).

Method and device for treating surfaces using a glow discharge plasma

The described device is introduced into a plastic container with a narrow opening and serves a plasma enhanced process for treating the inside surface of the container. The device ( ) extends between the container opening and the container bottom along the container axis (X) and comprising a gas feed tube ( ) for feeding a process gas into the container and permanent magnets ( ) for establishing a stationary magnetic field inside the container. The magnets ( ) form a column of superimposed magnets which is arranged inside the gas feed tube ( ). The north and south poles of each magnet are positioned on opposite sides of the container axis (X). The device may also comprise cooling means ( ) for cooling the gas feed tube and the magnets. Preferably the plasma used in the plasma enhanced process is sustained by microwaves or radio frequency waves and the magnets ( ) are preferably designed such that electron-cyclotron-resonance conditions are established in an area distanced from the container inner surface by 0 to 30 mm.

Device and method for treating the inside surface of a plastic container with a narrow opening in a plasma enhanced process

A method of producing an interiorly sterile package possessing superior barrier properties, in which method a package is produced by blow moulding by means of gaseous blow moulding medium, whereafter the blow-moulded package is provided on its inner walls with a coating of a silicon compound by vacuum deposition, the coating acting as a barrier. According to one preferred embodiment of the method, the vacuum deposition is carried out in accordance with conventional chemical plasma deposition by means of a process gas which is identical with the gaseous blow moulding medium employed in the blow moulding operation. As gaseous blow moulding medium and process gas, respectively, use is made of a gas mixture containing oxygen gas and vaporized organic silicon compound, the mixing ratio between the gas components being controlled in such a manner that the coating which is formed in the chemical plasma deposition process consists of a silicon oxide of the general chemical formula SiO.sub.x, where x may vary from between 1,8 and 2,2. The chemical plasma deposition is discontinued when the produced coating has achieved a thickness of less than 2000 .ANG..
