A wavelength selective switch (WSS) based on an array of MEMS mirrors tiltable in 1-dimension about only one axis exhibits 'hitting' or unwanted port connections during switching. Two WSS's can be cascaded to create M&#xd7;N switching functionality in a hitless manner by the inclusion of block ports at specified positions in one or both of the WSS's. Greater use efficiency of ports can be achieved if quasi-hitless performance is acceptable.

A hermetically packaged, MEMS array-based ROADM module is disclosed. The enclosure sidewalls and a top lid are made of Kovar, and the base is made of alumina ceramic AuSn-soldered to the enclosure sidewalls. The MEMS array is attached to the ceramic base. The optics are passively pre-aligned using a removable template and epoxied to an optical bench. The optical bench is actively aligned as a whole and attached to the ceramic base. A plurality of electrical feedthrough contact pins extend from the bottom of the ceramic base for connecting the MEMS to a connector on a printed circuit board. In one embodiment of the invention, the ceramic base extends beyond the footprint of the sidewalls of the enclosure of the module, for mounting additional electronic components, for example MEMS driver circuitry chips, directly to the ceramic base of the enclosure.

Packaging a reconfigurable optical add-drop module

An optical bench in a wavelength selective switch (WSS) is mounted using a combination of fixed mounts and stress-free mounts. The WSS is packaged in an enclosure including a base, a sidewall, and a lid. The optical switching engine is attached directly to the base. The optical bench is attached to the base and the optical components supported thereon are aligned with the array of switching elements of the switching engine. The optical bench is attached to the base with at plurality of mounts, which include at least one movable mount supporting movement of the optical bench in a plane parallel to the optical bench and at least one fixed mount maintaining optical alignment between the dispersive element and the array of switching elements.

The multi-unit wavelength switch enables multiple independent wavelength switching of a plurality of incoming multiplexed optical beams simultaneously on the same optical platform. The different units can have similar functionality or provide disparate functionality, e.g. any one or more of switching, dynamic gain equalization, wavelength blocking, and power monitoring.

Multi-unit wavelength dispersive device

The invention relates to multiport routing devices for routing optical signals which also provide beam attenuation by imparting a controllable offset between an optical beam and a selected optical port. A multiport optical routing device of the present invention has a plurality of non-equally spaced optical ports disposed in a row to enable beam offset for attenuation without substantially increasing optical crosstalk between adjacent ports in a compact port arrangement.

A micro-electro-mechanical (MEMS) mirror device for use in an optical switch is disclosed. A 'piano'-style MEMs device includes an elongated platform pivotally mounted proximate the middle thereof by a torsional hinge. The middle portion of the platform and the torsional hinge have a combined width less than the width of the rest of the platform, whereby several of these 'piano' MEMs devices can be positioned adjacent each other pivotally mounted about the same axis with only a relatively small air gap therebetween. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention the spacing between electrodes is increased without effecting the fill factor of the mirrors by interlacing two sets of tilting platforms, whereby the reflecting portions of both sets of tilting platforms are adjacent one another, while the non-reflecting portions of adjacent platforms are remote from each other.

An isolated polarization beam splitter or combiner, for joining light from different inputs into one common port, and for dividing a beam of light into orthogonal polarizations. In both modes of operation, the splitter/combiner provides isolation preventing transmission of light in a reverse direction. As a splitter, a beam of light is separated through a birefringent material into sub-beams of orthogonal polarization components, and each sub-beam is passed through a non-reciprocal polarization rotator to rotate the polarization so that a reflected beam, or other counter-transmitted light cannot return on the same path through the birefringent material to the source. As a combiner, two separate beams of light are launched with known orthogonal polarizations into a first birefringent material, passed through a non-reciprocal polarization rotator and then combined as orthogonal polarizations into a single output port.

Isolated polarization beam splitter and combiner

The invention relates to an optical circulator for use as a front end for an optical device platform, which requires a pair of like-polarized sub-beams as input. A combined beam of light comprising a plurality of wavelength channels is input the optical circulator at an input port, and the pair of like-polarized sub-beams is launched via a pair of input/output ports into the optical device platform, wherein the sub-beams are modified. Within the optical device platform the combined beam of light is separated into individual channels, and one or more of the channels can be dropped or attenuated before the remaining channels are recombined into to modified sub-beams for output. The two modified sub-beams are launched back into the optical circulator, which directs the modified sub-beams to an output port remote from the input port. Any light reentering the optical circulator with the wrong polarization will neither exit the input nor the output port.

Front-end circulator for an optical device

This invention relates to elements such as birefringent crystals, which are used to separate a non-collimated input beam into two orthogonally polarized sub-beams or to combine two orthogonally polarized beams into a single beam. The optical device lessens or obviates the optical path length difference encountered in prior art devices and provides a polarization beam splitter/combiner that has substantially same optical path lengths for two split or combined beams propagating therethrough. Alternatively, the device is designed to provide a selected path length difference to compensate for polarization mode dispersion in other optical devices. The polarization beam splitter/combiner in accordance with the invention has a first uniaxial crystal having an o-ray path and an e-ray path and having the first port disposed at an end face thereof; a second uniaxial crystal having an o-ray path and an e-ray path, the e-ray path of the second uniaxial crystal being optically coupled with the o-ray path of the first uniaxial crystal and the o-ray path of the second uniaxial crystal being optically coupled with the e-ray path of the first uniaxial crystal. Alternatively, the axis of the second crystal is aligned in such a manner that the o-ray path is retarded by an extraordinary index of refraction of the crystal and the e-ray path is retarded by an ordinary index of refraction to equalize the optical path lengths.
