A system and method for tracking an object within a surgical field are described. A system may include a mesh of cameras distributed around the surgical field, the mesh of cameras including, for example at least three cameras. Cameras in the mesh of cameras may be in known positions or orientations relative to the surgical field or may be mobile with position or orientation to be determined by the system. The system may include a computing system communicatively coupled to the mesh of cameras, the computing system including a processor and a memory device. The computing system may be used to generate tracking data for a tracked object from images or image data taken by one or more cameras of the mesh of cameras.

A system for creating at least one model of a bone and implanted implant comprises a processing unit; and a non-transitory computer-readable memory communicatively coupled to the processing unit and comprising computer-readable program instructions executable by the processing unit for: obtaining at least one image of at least part of a bone and of an implanted implant on the bone, the at least one image being patient specific, obtaining a virtual model of the implanted implant using an identity of the implanted implant, overlaying the virtual model of the implanted implant on the at least one image to determine a relative orientation of the implanted implant relative to the bone in the at least one image, and generating and outputting a current bone and implant model using the at least one image, the virtual model of the implanted implant and the overlaying.

Methods and surgical system for performing a surgical procedure. The surgical system includes a robotic system with a robotic arm having a surgical instrument attached thereto. A computer system of the robotic system receives at least one image and forms a model of a surgical area. A computer operated tracking system of the robotic system obtains position data related to a patient's bone from tracking elements. Based on the model of the surgical area and the tracked bone position, the robotic arm then performs the surgical procedure with the surgical instrument, and the robotic system adjusts the procedure as a result of the tracked bone position.

Systems and methods may be used to perform robot-aided surgery. A system may include a robotic controller to monitor a position and orientation of an end effector coupled to an end of a robotic arm. The robotic controller may apply a force to a bone using the end effector, such as via a soft tissue balancing component. The robotic controller may determine soft tissue balance using information from a tracking system, such as a position of a first tracker affixed to the bone. The soft tissue balance may be output, such as to a display device.

Systems and methods for femoral medial condyle spherical center identification and tracking are described herein. Once the spherical center of the medial condyle is identified, the spherical center is tracked using a pin or internal reference. The spherical center may be used to provide a key kinematic motion reference, such as when the medial condyle is adjusted during a surgical procedure. The tracking may be used to provide optical tracking, inertial tracking, or other tracking. In contrast with surface-mounted optical trackers, the spherical center tracking is not lost during resection (e.g., removal) of a bone surface. Tracking the medial condyle spherical center may reduce or eliminate the need for a surface-mounted optical tracker or preoperative 3-D modeling or of the joint.

A system and method may be used to evaluate soft tissue. A knee arthroplasty soft tissue evaluation may use an adjustable spacer, such as varying sized physical spacers or an inflatable bladder, along with a sensor to measure force, pressure, gap distance, or the like during a range of motion test. A method may include maintaining an equal pressure or gap distance for a medial component and a lateral component of an adjustable spacer during a range of motion test. Information, including, for example a maximum or minimum gap distance or pressure may be determined during the range of motion test. The determined information may be output for display or used to update a surgical plan.

A system and method may be used to evaluate soft tissue. A hip joint evaluation may use an adjustable spacer, such as varying sized physical spacers or an inflatable bladder, along with a sensor to measure force, pressure, gap distance, or the like, for example during a range of motion test. A method may include using a maximum pressure during the range of motion test to determine a maximum pressure during the range of motion test. The maximum pressure may be output for display on a user interface.

To address technical problems facing knee arthroplasty resection validation, the present subject matter provides a tracked knee arthroplasty instrument for objective measurement of resection depth. By performing a precise comparison between the location of the tracked knee arthroplasty instrument and a reference location, the knee arthroplasty instrument measures and validates each tibial and femoral resection. To address technical problems facing validation of joint laxity following knee arthroplasty, the tracked knee arthroplasty instrument is shaped to validate the flexion gap and extension gap. When the tracked knee arthroplasty instrument is inserted between the resected tibial plateau and femoral head, the instrument shape validates whether the desired flexion gap and extension gap have been achieved.

Embodiments of a system and method for surgical tracking and control are generally described herein. A system may include a robotic arm configured to allow interactive movement and controlled autonomous movement of an end effector, a cut guide mounted to the end effector of the robotic arm, the cut guide configured to guide a surgical instrument within a plane, a tracking system to determine a position and an orientation of the cut guide, and a control system to permit or prevent interactive movement or autonomous movement of the end effector.
