A method for controlling an electronic power steering system may include receiving, at an electronic power steering controller, at least one signal from at least one sensor and generating, by the electronic power steering controller using the at least one signal, a first autonomous steering command. The method may also include receiving, from a domain controller at the electronic power steering controller, a second autonomous steering command and comparing, by the electronic power steering controller, the first autonomous steering command and the second autonomous steering command. The method may also include selectively controlling, by the electronic power steering controller, the electronic power steering system using one of the first autonomous steering command and the second autonomous steering command, based on the comparison of the first autonomous steering command and the second autonomous steering command.

A position measurement system for a steering system includes a steering shaft. The position measurement system also includes a worm gear coupled to the steering shaft. The position measurement system further includes a worm in meshed engagement with the worm gear, the worm driven by a motor. The position measurement system yet further includes a first sensor operatively coupled to the worm to detect an angular position of the worm and the motor that drives the worm. The position measurement system also includes a driving gear coupled to the steering shaft. The position measurement system further includes a spur gear in meshed engagement with the driving gear. A method for providing operating mode transition for a vehicle includes receiving an input indicating a request to transition from a first operating mode of the vehicle to a second operating mode of the vehicle and determining a first planned trajectory corresponding to the first operating mode. The method also includes determining a second planned trajectory corresponding to the second operating mode. The method also includes determining a first road wheel actuator angle corresponding to the first planned trajectory and determining a second road wheel actuator angle corresponding to the second planned trajectory. The method also includes determining a difference between a current handwheel actuator angle and a handwheel actuator angle corresponding to the second road wheel actuator angle and, in response to a determination that the difference is less than a threshold, transitioning from the first operating mode to the second operating mode over a determined period.

Systems and methods for vehicle steering control

A method of transitioning from an autonomous driving mode to a manual driving mode for a vehicle is provided. The method includes comparing a steering device input angle to an autonomously controlled steering angle to determine a steering angle error. The method also includes comparing an acceleration or deceleration input to an autonomously controlled acceleration or deceleration input to determine an acceleration or deceleration error. The method further includes progressively transitioning to the manual driving mode in a weighted manner based on a confidence level factor determined by a calculation that factors in the steering angle error and the acceleration or deceleration error.

One or more embodiments are described for facilitating a vision based active steering system. An example steering system includes a handwheel actuator that generates a first feedback torque based on road surface forces at a roadwheel. The steering system further includes a controller that receives, from an image-based system, a control signal indicative of a type of road surface based on an image of the road surface. Further, in response, the controller adjusts one or more parameters of the handwheel actuator to generate a second feedback torque based on the road surface forces at the roadwheel.

A steer by wire steering system includes a steering wheel selectively coupled to a steering shaft, the steering wheel and steering shaft axially movable between a deployed position and a retracted position; an advanced driver assist system configured to steer the steerable wheels of a vehicle that is in communication with the steering wheel and steering shaft, the ADAS configured to selectively control the steering of the steerable wheels in an autonomous driving mode and a manual driving mode; and a steering system controller in communication with the ADAS, the steering system controller programmed to, while the steering wheel is in the retracted position, move the steering wheel to the deployed position and operatively couple the steering wheel to the steering shaft, in response to a vehicle operator request to deactivate a portion of the ADAS and transition from the autonomous driving mode to the manual driving mode.

A steering control system for an autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicle includes a steering input device accessible to a driver for providing steering control of the vehicle in a manual steering mode. Also included is at least one autonomous steering assembly for providing steering control of the vehicle in an autonomous steering mode. Further included is a plurality of road wheels controlled by a blended output of the steering input device and the at least one autonomous steering assembly during a transition steering mode.

A host vehicle includes a driver re-engagement assessment system and an X-by-wire device adapted for both manual control and automated control by an automated guidance system. The driver re-engagement assessment system includes a controller, a user interface, and test execution module and a test evaluation module. The user interface is configured to interface with an occupant and output an occupant directive signal for manual control to the controller. The test execution module initiates an occupant re-engagement test upon receipt of the occupant directive signal by the controller. The test evaluation module is configured to receive an occupant performance signal indicative of occupant performance during the re-engagement test, and evaluate the occupant performance signal to determine a test pass result and a test fail result. The manual control of the host vehicle is assumed by the occupant upon the determination of the test pass result.

Driver re-engagement assessment system for an autonomous vehicle

The invention provides an electric brake system and method. The electric brake system includes an electric motor having a portion moveable along a path between a plurality of positions for moving a brake pad and applying a selectable amount of braking force on a brake rotor. One of the plurality of positions is a minimal contact position. The minimal contact position is operable to change among the plurality of positions over time. The electric brake system also includes an electric controller for controlling the electric motor to move the portion along the path between the minimal contact position and at least one other of the plurality of positions for moving the brake pad and for selecting the amount of braking force. The electric brake system also includes at least one sensor for sensing at least one of motor current, motor acceleration, controller voltage, motor speed, motor voltage, and motor temperature, and communicating a sensed condition to the controller. The controller is operable to change the minimal contact position in response to the condition sensed and communicated by the at least one sensor.

The electric park brake of the present invention includes an electric caliper motor assembly. The electric caliper motor assembly includes a motor, which is operably coupled to a shaft. The motor and shaft are surrounded by a housing. A friction wheel is disposed axially and operably connected to the shaft within the housing. A park brake motor is disposed within a second housing. The second housing is connected to the first housing and positioned laterally in relation to the shaft. An acme screw is operably coupled to the park brake motor wherein the acme screw interacts with an acme nut. A lever is in juxtaposition to the acme nut and friction wheel. The lever is angularly displaced by the acme screw interacting with the acme nut to frictionally interact with the friction wheel when the park brake motor is activated. This provides a park brake feature and prevents movement of the shaft.
