A novel process for the selective elimination of fatty acid compounds containing carbon-carbon double bonds in trans configuration from a substrate containing cis- and trans-isomers of said fatty acid compounds, by selective adsorption by a microporous zeolite material is disclosed. The pore size and shape of usable zeolite materials enable differentiation between cis- and trans-isomers of unsaturated fatty acid chains. The zeolite materials used have a selectivity ratio &agr;,higher than 1.00; this ratio is defined based on the elution properties of cis and trans double bond containing fatty acid methylesters dissolved in n-hexane during a column chromatography experiment with the zeolite material as the stationary phase and n-hexane as the mobile phase. Besides selective adsorption of trans-unsaturated fatty acid compounds, simultaneous or subsequent total or partial hydrogenation of the double bonds in said compounds can be carried out while using the same or similar zeolite material, containing finely dispersed catalytic active metals. The majority of these catalytic active sites must be inside the pores.

This invention relates to a process for the isomerization of a vinyl glycol to an unsaturated diol in the presence of a rhenium-based catalyst; and to a catalyst for said isomerization. More specifically, this invention relates to the isomerization of 3-butene-1,2-diol to 2-butene-1,4-diol; and to a process for the manufacture of 1,4-butanediol involving the step of isomerizing 3-butene-1,2-diol to 2-butene-1,4-diol in the presence of said catalyst. The catalyst is characterized in that it comprises a transition metal on a carrier wherein the carrier is a zeolite Y type substance containing silicon and aluminum in a mole ratio of from about 1.5:1 to about 1000:1, and the transition metal is rhenium or a rhenium compound and mixtures thereof present in an amount of from about 0.1 to about 50 weight percent based on total combined weight of the carrier and of the rhenium or rhenium compound and mixtures thereof.

This invention relates to a process for obtaining ethylene from anhydrous or aqueous ethanol by means of a catalyst of the zeolite type containing a silicate of a metal M1 having a valence of 3 and 4 and a tetraedric coordination and containing possibly another charge compensating metal M2 selected among the elements of the Ia, Ib, IIa, IIb, IIIa, IIIb, IVa, IVb, Va, VIb, VIIb and VIII groups of the Mendeljev Table. According to the invention, anhydrous or aqueous ethanol is contacted with a catalyst of the above type, in which the ratio (M1-M2/n)/(Si+M1)(in which II is the valence of said other metal) is at most equal to 1.5%. The temperature of the catalyst and the contact time of ethanol with said catalyst are such that the conversion rate of ethanol into ethylene is about 100% and the carbon selectivity for ethylene is at least equal to about 99% by weight.

The present invention relates to a process for the activation of siliceous catalysts selected among zeolites with a high silica content, organosilicates, polymorphous crystalline silicas and zeolites deactivated by treatment with water vapor. According to the invention, the catalyst is activated by reacting aluminum chloride and hydrogen chloride, both in gaseous phase with the catalyst, at a temperature between about 150.degree. and 600.degree. C. in the same reactor, the possible excess of gaseous hydrogen chloride being removed by means of an inert gas, such as nitrogen.
