An FC-type optoelectronic assembly is provided that has a threaded plastic body that is adapted to mate with a threaded sleeve of an FC plug by engaging the threaded sleeve the FC plug with the threaded body of the FC-type optoelectronic assembly. The threaded plastic body is transparent to an operational wavelength of the FC-type optoelectronic assembly and has an optical element integrally formed therein. A TO-can header is housed in the threaded plastic body. A miniature PCB may be used for mounting the electrical and optoelectronic components of the TO-can header assembly on the header of the TO-can header assembly.

There is provided an opto-electronic communication system. The opto-electronic communication system has (a) a transmitter module including an electro-optical source for converting an electrical input signal into an optical output signal, (b) a receiver module including an opto-electrical detector for converting an optical input signal into an electrical output signal, (c) a sensor for sensing a bit rate of the optical input signal, (d) an adaptation unit associated with the transmitter module for varying an operation parameter of the transmitter module, and (e) a processing unit for determining a desired operating parameter of the transmitter module based on the bit rate, and for controlling operation of the adaptation unit in order to adapt operation of the transmitter module in accordance with the desired operating parameter.

Electro-optical communication system

Electro-optical apparatus includes a housing having at least one electrical subassembly (ESA) and at least one optical subassembly (OSA) therein as well as cavities within the housing and paths for transmitting electrical signals between the electrical and optical subassemblies. A glob top material is applied on at least a part of said paths, and hardened mass of a liquid electromagnetic absorber material at least partly fills the cavities in the housing. The hardened absorber material provides radiation absorption for the electro-optical apparatus and the glob top material protects the transmission paths from the absorber material, thereby avoiding undesired absorption of useful signals.

A package for opto-electrical components, includes a casing having (1) a chamber and (2) at least one board or tile for carrying the opto-electrical components. The casing has an opening (shaped as a parallelogram) defining an optical feed-through path between the chamber and the outside of the casing. A receiver for optical signals arranged in packets of data having a discontinuous flow pre-reads the signal and generates, for each packet, a corresponding signal indicating the phase of the data in the packet, and a threshold level indicating the packet mean signal power. A delay line delays the discontinuous flow by a delay interval. A receiver responsive to the discontinuous flow delayed by the delay line performs, on each packet, a receiving operation on the basis of the threshold level and with a phase identified on the basis of the phase indicating signal.

A process and device are provided for stabilizing the emission wavelength of an optical source, which emits radiation at a first wavelength, by locking to the emission wavelength of an optical reference source which emits radiation at a second wavelength which is substantially different from the first. The stabilization device applies to the source to be stabilized a feedback signal obtained by detection of an optical beat between the two radiations. A two-photon absorption for the first wavelength is used to generate the beat.

The signal to be controlled is sent along an optical fiber by a wavelength tunable laser whose emission wavelength may be varied as a function of a possible phase variation in the received signal with respect to a reference phase. At the receiving end of the fiber a control signal is generated by extracting a fraction of the power associated with the received signal and sending such fraction back towards the transmitting end, and at the transmitting end the phase of the fraction is compared with that of the original signal and the tunable laser is driven in such a way as to transmit a wavelength such that the clock information reaches the receiving end with the reference phase.

In a method for the automatic frequency control of semiconductor kasers, the signal emitted from the laser (1) is sent to an optical resonator (6) whose resonance frequency is modulated by a ramp signal, the signal outgoing from the resonator (6) is converted into an electrical signal, the derivative of such an electrical signal is calculated, the zero crossing of the derivative is detected, the ramp signal is sampled in corresponding with such a zero crossing, and the sample thus obtained is algebraically summed to a reference signal depenent on the nominal laser emission frequency, thus obtaining an error signal which is sent to devices (3) driving the laser (1). In case of a plurality of lasers (1a . . . 1n) the signals of which are wavelength multiplexed, the rame signal is sampled in correspondence with the derivative zero crossings corresponding with the emission frequencies of the individual lasers (1a . . 1n), and the samples thus obtained are compared with respective reference signals, obtaining a control signal for each laser. A device for implementing the method is also supplied (FIG. 1).
