A surgical retractor includes a body portion and first and second retractor arms operatively coupled thereto. The body portion includes a rotatable knob, a first blade holder, and a first blade. The first blade is configured for axial displacement with the first blade holder and angulation relative to the first blade holder about a first axis. The first and second retractor arms include respective second and third blades detachably secured thereto. The first and second retractor arms are transitionable between an approximated configuration and a spaced apart configuration. The second and third blades are configured to angulate about respective second and third axes that are defined by the respective first and second retractor arms.

Lateral access system and method of use

An intersomatic cage, an intervertebral prosthesis, an anchoring device and an instrument for implantation of the cage or the prosthesis and the anchoring device are provided. An intersomatic cage or an intervertebral prosthesis fit closely to the anchoring device, which includes a body of elongated shape on a longitudinal axis, of curved shape describing, along the longitudinal axis, an arc whose dimensions and radius of curvature are designed in such a manner that the anchoring device may be implanted in the vertebral plate of a vertebra by presenting its longitudinal axis substantially along the plane of the intervertebral space, where the anchoring device is inserted, by means of the instrument, through a slot located in at least one peripheral wall of the cage or on at least one plate of the intervertebral disc prosthesis to penetrate into at least one vertebral plate.

Intersomatic cage, intervertebral prosthesis, anchoring device and implantation instruments

A precision depth guided instrument, such as a Jamshidi needle, is provided for use in various surgeries related to the vertebrae. The instrument includes an outer cannula, an inner cannula and a stylet. After the cortical bone of a vertebra is penetrated by the outer cannula of the instrument, the depth of penetration of the inner cannula is adjusted by rotation of the inner cannula. The inner cannula is then moved further into the vertebrae, and a stop mounted on the outer cannula controls the depth of penetration of the inner cannula. The correct depth of penetration is determined by radiography prior to the procedure.

Depth controlled Jamshidi needle

An interbody spacer is disclosed and includes a body portion defining a longitudinal axis. The longitudinal axis includes a distal end portion, a proximal end portion, opposed side surfaces that extend between the distal and proximal end portions, and top and bottom surfaces configured and adapted to engage vertebral bodies. The body portion includes a cavity defined through the top and bottom surfaces that increases in width at a medial position thereof. The cavity is configured to retain biological material therein. A method of performing spinal surgery is also disclosed.

Interbody spacer

A surgical access device including a frame, first and second supports, and first and second retractor blades releasably coupled with the first and second supports, respectively. The frame has first and second arms. The first support is releasably coupled with the first and second arms. The second support is slidably mounted on the first and second arms. The second support is movable between a first position with the retractor blades in close cooperative position and a spaced apart position with respect to the first support. The first and second retractor blades each have a distal end portion configured and adapted to engage a vertebral body. In one method of use, the retractor is inserted through an incision in first orientation with the blades in close approximation and rotated approximately 90&#xb0;, before spreading the retractor blades to retract tissue.

An intervertebral implant includes a body portion defining a longitudinal axis. The body portion includes a distal end portion, a proximal end portion, anterior and posterior walls that extend between the distal and proximal end portions, and top and bottom surfaces. At least one of the top and bottom surfaces includes a plurality of substantially concentrically arranged ridges configured and adapted to engage vertebral bodies. In particular, the plurality of substantially concentrically arranged ridges are a plurality of ring-shaped protrusions that define a generally saw-tooth pattern in a radial direction.

A rod reduction device includes a housing defining a longitudinal axis. The housing has first and second arms extending distally therefrom. The distal ends of the arms are configured to releasably attach to a bone anchor. An anvil is operatively associated with the first and second arms of the housing and translatable along the longitudinal axis for facilitating the insertion of a spinal rod into the bone anchor. The anvil and each arm are positionable between an open position and a closed position.
