A lancing device integrated with a sensing strip and method of making and using the same are provided. A lance and analyte sensing strip are combined in a single, preferably disposable, device. In a preferred embodiment, a slot is provided in a support member so the lance can be engaged by a lance driver and driven into the skin producing a bodily fluid sample from a wound. The sensing area of the sensing strip is adjacent to the wound location reducing dexterity requirements for patients.

A device for monitoring, sampling or delivering a substance to the skin of a patient includes a medical device and a stretching device for stretching the skin to enhance the contact by the medical device. The medical device generally includes at least a skin penetrating member, such as a cannula. The cannula can be a single needle or an array of microneedles. The method for monitoring, sampling or delivering a substance positions the device on the skin and presses downwardly on the device causing the stretching device to stretch the skin in a target area of the skin penetrating member to enable uniform penetration of the skin. The uniform penetration provides for a more uniform monitoring, sampling or delivery of the substance to the patient.

A device for the separation of the lighter fraction from the heavier fraction of a liquid sample for use with two evacuated receptacles includes a housing having an interior cavity and a membrane separator dividing this cavity into a first portion and a second portion. The membrane separator has a porosity selected for the desired separation thereacross. An inlet structure is provided for fluid communication between the first portion of the interior cavity and the source of the liquid sample. First structure is provided to allow fluid communication between the first portion of the interior cavity and the first evacuated receptacle. This first structure is opposed from the inlet structure so that liquid passing from the inlet to the first structure travels in a direction along the surface of the membrane. Further structure is provided to allow fluid communication between the second portion of the interior cavity and the second evacuated receptacle.
