Polymer matrix particles useful for inhibiting scale formation in oil and gas wells are described. The insoluble, porous, crosslinked polymer matrix includes a polymer backbone and ionic functional groups covalently bonded to the backbone, the ionic functional groups being capable of selectively attracting and binding salt scale-forming ions when in contact with a liquid containing such ions.

Polymer matrix particles for inhibiting scale formation in oil and gas wells

Bio-based surfactants have great opportunity for use in a variety of applications such as laundry detergents, industrial cleaners, adjuvants, and oil & gas. Surfactants in these applications can be nonionic, anionic, cationic, or amphoteric. Utilizing high oleic soybean oil as a platform chemical, a variety of surfactants and properties can be produced. While early work focused solely on surfactant use in laundry cleaning and fracking, recent work has expanded functional groups and application evaluations in hard surface cleaning. The current invention expands on Battelle's high oleic soybean oil (HOSO) surfactant technology. Use of HOSO overcomes the limitations of regular soybean oil and significantly reduces or eliminates undesirable byproducts in most chemistries. However, with use of select reagents, a few candidates were achievable with regular epoxidized soybean oil (ESO). The HOSO surfactant platform offers several key advantages including: a highly water miscible (not typical of C18 surfactants) and water stable surfactant; ability to adjust and vary hydrophilic-lipophilic (HLB) values for stain removal performance; and increased biodegradability without toxic or persistent by-products.

Bio-based surfactants

Methods and materials for sand control in water injection sites are disclosed. Proppant particles may be coated with some particles coated with a solid epoxy and other proppant particles coated with a solid epoxy curative (such as amine, hydroxyl, carboxyl, anhydride) that would bind the particles through an epoxy reaction. The invention may be advantageous for forming underground structures useful in the extraction of hydrocarbons.

Multi-component solid epoxy proppant binder resins

Aqueous prepolymer dispersions are provided, as are methods for making aqueous prepolymer dispersions. For example, an aqueous polyurethane prepolymer dispersion may be prepared by a process. The process may include contacting a soybean oil polyester polyol and an isocyanate reactive monomer together in a first mixture. The isocyanate reactive monomer may be functionalized with a tertiary amine salt of an isocyanate-unreactive organic acid. The process may include contacting the first mixture with a diisocyanate to form a neutralized polyurethane prepolymer. The process may include contacting the neutralized polyurethane prepolymer with water to form the aqueous polyurethane prepolymer dispersion.

Proppant particles may be coated with some particles coated with a diene and other proppant particles coated with a dienophile that would bind the particles through a Diels-Alder reaction. In some other embodiments, proppant particles may be coated with alternating layers of diene and dienophile that would react through a Diels-Alder reaction. The invention may be advantageous for forming underground structures useful in the extraction of hydrocarbons.
