This invention relates to certain dendrimer compounds. In particular, this invention relates to novel dendrimer compounds that can be elaborated to give increasingly large and complex compounds. These elaborated compounds can be attached to, or can encapsulate within, active agent(s) so as to beneficially modify the characteristics of that active agent. Alternatively, the elaborated compounds can themselves be beneficially modified into therapeutic agents by the attachment of inactive agents.

Dendrimer scaffolds for pharmaceutical use

The following invention is directed to macromolecules having controlled stoichiometry and topology, processes for their production, and applications for their use. The macromolecules have a controlled functional moiety stoichiometry and include at least one dendritic motif having a surface layer formed from at least one surface building unit and at least one subsurface layer formed from at least one building unit, the surface building unit and building units having a hydrocarbon backbone bearing a carbonyl group and at least one amine group; and at least two different functional moieties on the building unit and/or surface building unit; where functional moiety stoichiometry refers to the number and type of functional moieties.

Macromolecular compounds having controlled stoichiometry

A &bgr;-D-glucofuranose compound which is 1,2,3,5,6-penta-O-propanoyl-&bgr;-D-glucofuranose, preferably in crystalline form, is prepared from D-glucose. The compound is prepared by reacting D-glucose with boric acid, or an equivalent thereof, followed by treatment with a propanoylating reagent, preferably propanoic anhydride. The compound is useful for the preparation of other compounds, such as glucofuranosides.
