A mobile communication device is capable of operation in accordance with a plurality of operation mode profiles. Data linking each operation mode profile to a respective operation identifier are stored in the device memory. The device controller, coupled to a contained near field communication (NFC) device, is responsive to operation mode identifier data received from the NFC device during near field communication with an external establishment to change operation from an initial mode to the operation mode linked to the received data.

Disclosed is a system and method for channel decoding speech frames in a receiver capable of multiple (M) codec modes, wherein channel encoded speech frames include an inband bit portion and a speech portion. An inband bit decoder decodes the inband bit portion () of a received frame to obtain confidence levels associated with each of the M codec modes. Using these confidence levels, the codec modes are ordered from most to least likely. The speech frame is then decoded by a channel decoder using the most likely codec mode (). A frame determination check () is performed to determine the quality of the decoded speech frame. If the decoded speech frame is determined to be of poor quality, then the channel decoding process is repeated using the next most likely codec mode () corresponding to the next highest inband bit decoding confidence level. This process is repeated until a good speech frame is decoded or some exit criteria is reached.

One implementation initially fills the filter state with the first received channel quality measurement. For switching from non-DTX to DTX mode in a receiver, a received AMR frame is subjected to a SID_FIRST marker comparison. If the results of the SID_FIRST marker comparison exceed a SID_FIRST threshold, then the received AMR frame is processed as a SID_FIRST frame and the receiver is switched to DTX mode. Otherwise, the received AMR frame is subjected to a SID_UPDATE marker comparison. If the results of the SID_UPDATE marker comparison exceed a SID_UPDATE threshold, then the received AMR frame is processed as a SID_UPDATE frame and the receiver is switched to DTX mode. Otherwise, the received AMR frame is processed as a voice frame in non-DTX mode. For switching from DTX to non-DTX mode in a receiver, a received AMR frame in DTX mode is subjected to an ONSET frame comparison. If the results of the ONSET frame comparison exceed a threshold, then the received AMR frame is processed as an ONSET frame and the receiver is switched to non-DTX mode. Otherwise, the received AMR frame is subjected to a SID_UPDATE marker comparison. If the results of the SID_UPDATE marker comparison exceed a threshold, then the received AMR frame is processed as a SID_UPDATE frame and the receiver remains in inactive DTX mode. Otherwise, it is determined whether the received AMR frame is a voice frame, and if so, the receiver is switched to non-DTX mode, and if not, the received AMR frame is classified as a NO_DATA frame and the receiver remains in inactive DTX mode.

Received signal quality (bit error rate) estimates for a communication channel are provided by a receiver apparatus which is connected to the communication channel and which includes a convolutional decoder providing an estimate of a transmitted data frame and an associated final decision metric. The bit error rate estimate is generated by a bit error rate estimation circuit which includes a memory containing values for mapping the final decision metric to a corresponding bit error rate estimate. The voice encoder includes a sampler that captures frames of time-domain samples of an audio signal. A voice activity detector operatively coupled to the sampler determines presence or absence of speech in the current frame. A transformer is operatively coupled to the sampler for transforming the frame of time-domain audio samples into an estimate of the power spectrum of that frame. A noise model adapter operatively associated with the transformer updates a frequency-domain noise model based on the power spectrum estimate of the current frame if the voice activity detector indicates an absence of speech in this frame. A filter computation block operatively coupled to the noise model adapter and the transform computes a spectral enhancement (noise suppression) filter based on the current power spectrum estimate and the adapted noise model. A spectral enhancement block operatively coupled to the transformer and the filter computation block applies the spectral enhancement filter to the current power spectrum estimate. A quantizer and encoder block transforms the voice encoder model parameters, including the enhanced spectral magnitudes, into a frame of encoded bits.
