An apparatus may include an energy rate limiter, an electro-optical transmitter, and an energy monitor. The energy rate limiter limits energy transfer, based on an energy control signal, from a power supply to the energy storage module. The energy storage module is charged based on the energy transfer from the power supply. The electro-optical transmitter includes lasers coupled to local energy storage module. Laser firings of the lasers are based on an electrical potential of the energy storage module and laser enable signals corresponding to the lasers. The energy monitor is coupled to the energy storage module and triggers a safety alarm signal if a voltage provided by the energy storage module violates a safety condition related to a threshold voltage. The energy rate limiter terminates the energy transfer from the power supply to the local energy storage module after the safety condition is violated.

Apparatus and methods for safe pulsed laser operation

A transmitter module is disclosed, where the transmitter module includes optical sources, an optical multiplexer to multiple optical signals each output from optical sources, an optical detector to detect an output of the optical multiplexer, and a controller. The controller alternately superposes a dither signal on a bias current provided to the optical source, and the bias current is controlled based on a magnitude of the dither signal, which is detected by a configuration similar to the lock-in amplifier.

Transmitter optical module outputting an optical signal containing two or more wavelengths

A wavelength monitor monolithically integrated with a tunable LD is disclosed. The wavelength monitor includes at least two filters, each filter having a different periodic transmission spectrum. A transmittance of the first filter, and another transmittance of the second filter at a grid wavelength attributed to a WDM system forms a combination which is specific to the grid wavelength but different from other combinations at other grid wavelengths.

An optical transceiver of one embodiment includes a transmitter optical subassembly to transmit an optical signal, a receiver optical subassembly to receive an optical signal, a mother board, a daughter board, and a housing. The mother board mounts electronic circuits that electrically communicate with the optical transmitter optical subassembly and the receiver optical subassembly. The daughter board mounts other electronic circuits that electrically communicate with the optical transmitter optical subassembly and the receiver optical subassembly. The daughter board has an extra area mounting a portion of the other electronic circuits. The housing defines a space for installing the optical transmitter optical subassembly, the receiver optical subassembly, the mother board, and the daughter board. The extra area is disposed outside the space.

An optical transceiver that reduces the EMI noise leaked therefrom is disclosed. The optical transceiver provides a metal housing, an optical subassembly, and an electronic circuit. The metal housing includes a first space to install the electronic circuit, and a second space to install the optical subassembly. At least the first space has inner surfaces having a corrugated shape to reduce the resonance of the electromagnetic waves.

An optical transceiver implemented with a tunable LD is disclosed. The tunable LD is installed within a TOSA (Transmitter Optical Subassembly). The optical transceiver provides two circuit boards arranged in the up-and-down relation. The TOSA is primarily connected to the second board but signals to drive the tunable LD are carried on an FPC board directly connected to the first board that mounts a driver circuit for the tunable LD.

An optical transceiver that reduces the EMI noise leaked therefrom is reduced is disclosed. The optical transceiver of the invention provides a metal housing, an optical subassembly, and an electronic circuit. The metal housing includes a first space that installs the electronic circuit and a second space that installs the optical subassembly. The first space and the second space are electrically shielded to each other, in addition that both spaces are shielded from the external. In the optical transceiver of the invention, even the second space provides the optical path to the optical connector, which becomes a definite leak path for the EMI noise, the leakage from the first space to the external through the optical path is prevented.

Optical transceiver providing independent spaces for electrical components and for optical components

An optical transceiver module is disclosed with improved digital diagnostic integrated circuits. The optical transceiver includes an electrical-to-optical transmitter and an optical-to-electrical receiver each coupled to a digital diagnostic integrated circuit. A bi-directional 2-wire control interface is provided and a microcontroller couples the digital diagnostic integrated circuit to the control interface. Various methods are described for using the microcontroller to incorporate changes or diagnostic functions in the digital diagnostic integrated circuit.

Optical transceiver module with improved DDIC and methods of use

An optoelectronic subassembly for optoelectronic modules includes a supporting substrate with an optoelectronic device mounted on a mounting surface. A supporting structure includes a trench for mounting the subassembly and a lens assembly. Four offset arms are provided each including a substrate-mounting portion, a supporting-structure-mounting portion, and a linking portion. The substrate-mounting portion and the supporting-structure-mounting portion have parallel surfaces with the linking portion extending at an angle therebetween. The arms include deformable material for allowing small changes in the angle. One of the parallel surfaces of each of the offset arms is mounted on either the mounting surface or an opposed surface of the supporting substrate and the other of the parallel surfaces is mounted on the support structure with the substrate suspended in the trench. The linking portion of the arms is then deformed to align the optoelectronic device with the lens assembly.

Optical subassembly for optoelectronic devices

An electro-optic module with an optical coupling efficiency, the module comprising a receptacle assembly, wherein an end of the receptacle assembly is capable of receiving a light guiding element and wherein an opposite end of the receptacle assembly is capable of receiving an optical lens assembly positioned therein the receptacle assembly. An optoelectric package which includes an optoelectronic device is capable of being affixed to the opposite end of the receptacle assembly wherein an optical axis extends from the end to the opposite end of the receptacle assembly such that the light guiding element and the optoelectric device are in communication through a lens included in the optical lens assembly. The optical lens assembly is held fixedly in place against an inward periphery of the receptacle assembly such that a distance between the lens and the optoelectronic device can be adjusted to adjust the optical coupling efficiency.

Optical/electrical module

Optical component mounting and interconnect apparatus includes a base formed of at least one layer of insulating material defining first and second opposed major surfaces. A plurality of vias extend through the base. The vias include a signal via and two spaced apart ground vias parallel with and on opposite sides of the signal via. The two ground vias are connected to ground to form a transmission line with the signal via. An optical component is mounted on the first major surface of the base with an electrical terminal affixed to one end of the signal via and a flex circuit is affixed to the second major surface of the base with an electrical connection to the opposite end of the signal via.

Component interconnect apparatus

Light source monitoring apparatus includes a light source having drive electronics for supplying drive current to the light source. A monitor diode is connected to the drive electronics for controlling the amount of drive current supplied to the light source. A lens system is positioned to receive the beam of light from the light source and transmit substantially all of the beam of light along an optical axis to a light terminal. The lens system includes a first lens element positioned along the optical axis and adjacent the light source and a second lens element positioned along the optical axis and adjacent the light terminal. A light reflecting surface in the lens system is positioned along the optical axis to reflect a portion of the beam of light at an angle to the optical axis onto the monitor diode.

Light source monitoring apparatus

An optoelectric module includes a cylindrical ferrule defining an optical axis and having a first end constructed to receive an optical fiber aligned along the optical axis. A TO-can is positioned within the ferrule and has a first end with an optical element therein for conducting light therethrough. A base is affixed to the second end of the TO-can and to the second end of the ferrule. A laser is mounted within the TO-can so that light generated by the laser is directed through the optical element along the optical axis. A laser driver is mounted on the base and electrically connected to the laser. External connections to the laser driver are completed by either electrical traces on a surface of the base, vias through the base, or flexible leads mounted on the base.

Optoelectric module

An optoelectric module includes a cylindrical ferrule defining an optical axis and having a first end constructed to receive an optical fiber aligned along the optical axis. An optical element, including a lens, is engaged in the ferrule between the first and second ends and positioned to convey light along the optical axis. The second end of the ferrule is closed by a base. An optical component is mounted on the base so that light is directed through the lens from the optical component to the optical fiber or from the optical fiber to the optical component. Either a laser driver or an amplifier is mounted on the base and electrically connected to the optical component and external connections are made to the laser driver or the amplifier by electrical traces on a surface of the base, vias through the base, or flex leads mounted on the base.

Optical alignment apparatus includes a first element mounting a first lens and a light source and a second element mounting a second lens and a light receiving structure. The first lens is placed a first distance from the light source and is constructed to collimate light received from the light source. The first and second elements are mounted relative to each other to position the second lens a third distance from the first lens and to receive the collimated light from the first lens. The second lens is positioned a second distance from the light receiving structure to focus the collimated light on the light receiving structure. The first and second lens are constructed so that the first and second distances are dependent upon each other and the third distance is independent of the first and second distances.
