In a personal area network, a method for including an appliance (121). The method includes steps of a) determining, by the personal area network (120), that the appliance (121) should be included in the personal area network (120); b) determining (253) that all individual members (121) of the personal area network (120) are in data communication with the personal area network (120); and c) when all individual members (121) of the personal area network (120) are in data communication with the personal area network (120), performing substeps of: i) selecting (259) a selected member (121) of the personal area network (120); ii) programming (261) security criteria relevant to the selected member (121) into the appliance (121); and iii) programming (263) security criteria relevant to the appliance (121) into the selected member (121).

Interactive appliance security system and method

A paging system (10) includes any number of spaced apart transmitters (12), each of which has its own area (15) of coverage. A population of subscriber units (24) freely roams between the areas (15). When a subscriber unit (24) roams to a new area (15), a call is placed from a telephone instrument (22) to a destination controller (28) through the public switched telecommunication network (21). A subscriber ID and location data are transferred to the system (10) during this call. The location data are used internally by the system (10) to route pages to only the transmitters (12) whose areas (15) correspond to the location data, and only these transmitters (12) broadcast the pages. Subscriber units (24) may generate the location data which the system (10) uses in routing pages to transmitters (12). A position-determining receiver (42) may directly obtain location data from a positioning system (34). Alternatively, location data may be obtained from transmissions broadcast by the transmitters (12).

Wide area paging with roaming subscriber units

An electronic encoder for use in setting fuzes in munitions and the like. The electronic encoder comprising: a switch which activates the electronic encoder by coupling in the power supply and which is used to set the electronic encoder; a display for displaying the setting of the electronic encoder; a display driver for driving the display; a selector operated by the switch for selecting a digit of the display to be set; and a setting device operated by the switch for setting the portion of the display. This setting, when completed, is transmitted to the fuse of the munition or the like.

Electronic encoder

A safety and arming mechanism wherein a sliding member is held in an out-of-line position breaking the fuze train. An actuator releases the sliding member and moves the sliding member, which contains a stab detonator, in-line and towards a firing pin completing the fuze train. Arming and detonating occur at the same time when the fuze train is completed and the stab detonator is impaled on the firing pin.
