A system and method for monitoring the blood pressure of a patient that allows for a device sensor to be recalibrated according to atmospheric pressure without removing the device sensor from inside the patient. This permits quickly monitoring the blood pressure of a patient if a re-zero is needed. The invention has a blood pressure monitor (BPM) that obtains an atmospheric pressure observation. The atmospheric pressure observation is adjusted and stored to memory as a zero value. The zero value is retrieved to recalibrate the system and method if a device sensor has been disconnected from and reconnected to the same or a different BPM, the patient has been moved such that the surroundings have been altered to make it necessary to recalibrate according to atmospheric pressure, and/or the device sensor has been connected to a different patient care monitor.

Blood pressure monitoring with zero function system and method

A transducer interface system/method allowing conversion from an analog sensor input to a standardized analog output interface is disclosed. In some preferred embodiments the system/method permits a fiber optic pressure sensor to be interfaced to a standard patient care monitor (PCM) system using standardized Wheatstone Bridge analog interface inputs. Within this context the Wheatstone Bridge sensed output is defined by stimulus from the PCM and modulation of bridge element values by the conditioned output of an analog pressure sensor. The use of analog-to-digital-to-analog conversion in this transducer interface permits retrofitting of PCM devices having analog Wheatstone Bridge inputs with advanced patient monitoring sensors without the need for specialized modifications to the baseline PCM data collection framework. Methods disclosed herein include techniques to connect arbitrary types/numbers of analog sensors to traditional PCM systems without the need for PCM system hardware/software modifications.

Disclosed is a method of navigating a spinal subarchnoid space in a living being, that includes percutaneously introducing a device into the spinal subarachnoid space at an entry location. The device has a first passageway that is sized to slidably receive, and work with, at least a guidewire. The device can be a catheter or a sheath. The method can also include advancing the device within the spinal subarachnoid space at least more than 10 centimeters from the entry location. Alternatively, the method can include advancing the device within the spinal subarachnoid space to facilitate intracranial access with a second device introduced through the first passageway. Also disclosed is a device suited for attachment to a patient's skin, such as a sheath, that includes an elongated member, a skin-attachment apparatus having a flexible skin-attachment flap, and a valve apparatus.

Methods and apparatuses for navigating the subarachnoid space

A multi-element occlusion device () provides an improvement over existing systems by increasing the occupation of a vascular lumen. The device () comprises an anchoring element (), a lead element () and at least one fiber () attaching said elements. The elements and fibers produce a cumulative occlusive effect greater than the sum of the individual elements. When placed in the blood stream, the anchoring element () lodges against the vessel wall and the lead element () is carried to a position distal thereto. In another embodiment, an 'umbrella' of support members extend from the lead element. A fabric web extends between these support members. The umbrella intravascular device expands upon its exit from the catheter. The fabric web produces complete occlusion of the vessel without the need for thrombosis to form between the elements. With the use of multi-element deployment, the device decreases the risk of continued canalization and recanalization.
