The present disclosure provides a coating composition useful as a coating on food cans, and particularly as interior white or gold food can coatings. The coating composition includes a polyester polymer preferably having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of less than 10,000, a glass transition temperature (Tg) of more than 60° C., and a hydroxyl value greater than 10 mg KOH/g resin. The polyester preferably includes one or more cyclic groups selected from a mono-cyclic group having five ring members or less, a polycyclic group, or both, preferably in a backbone of the polyester polymer.

Coating compositions including a polyester, articles, and methods of coating

The present disclosure provides a coating composition useful as a coating on food cans, and particularly as interior white or gold food can coatings. The coating composition includes a polyester polymer preferably having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of less than 10,000, a glass transition temperature (Tg) of more than 60&#xb0; C., and a hydroxyl value greater than 10 mg KOH/g resin. The polyester preferably includes one or more cyclic groups selected from a mono-cyclic group having five ring members or less, a polycyclic group, or both, preferably in a backbone of the polyester polymer.

The present invention is based upon a coating system that uses polycyclic polyester polymers and phenolic resins. The coating system comprises first and second coatings. The first coating preferably is derived from ingredients comprising a polycyclic polyester resin having first and second fused rings that share at least two atoms in common. The second coating preferably is derived from ingredients comprising a polycyclic polyester resin that may be different than the polyester of the first coating.

Removable closure and coating system

The present invention provides coating systems that use polycyclic polyester resins in combination with phenolic resins. The combination of these resin materials provides a coating composition that provides cured coatings with excellent adhesion, blush resistance, stain resistance, and corrosion resistance in a single coating composition. This makes the coating compositions well suited for use to form coatings on closures used in the packaging industry for food and beverages. In many embodiments, even though PVC and BPA materials are excluded, the coating compositions provide monocoats whose performance substantially matches and even exceeds the performance of monocoats formed from PVC and BPA containing materials.

A coating system is provided that includes an undercoat composition that includes a thermoplastic dispersion. In certain preferred embodiments, the coating system is a multi-coat system that includes the undercoat composition and an overcoat composition that includes a thermoplastic dispersion. In one embodiment, the coating system is suitable for use on a food-contact surface of a food or beverage container.
