Liquid ventilator and methods integrating the concept of total liquid ventilation (TLV) using liquid volumes below functional residual capacity (FRC) of mammal's lungs are disclosed. Beyond the automatization of the whole process, the technology has been up-scaled to confirm that TLV at residual volumes below FRC can provide a safe procedure while enabling the full potential of TLV in a mammal such as humans or adult-sized animals. Such tidal liquid ventilation strongly differs from the previously known TLV approach, opening promising perspectives for a safer clinical translation. Also disclosed are apparatus and method for safe and fast induction of hypothermia during liquid ventilation of a mammal.

Liquid ventilator and method to induce tidal liquid ventilation and/or hyporthermia

A method, connector and system for obtaining an indirect measurement of a parameter in a patient with a total liquid ventilation (TLV) system. At least one parameter measurement is obtained of a liquid taken in the TLV system comprising an endotracheal tube having a distal end inserted in a patient's trachea. At least one flow measurement is obtained of a liquid taken in the TLV system. Considering a fluid model of the TLV system, the at least one parameter measurement and the least one flow measurement are processed into the indirect measurement of the parameter in the patient. The indirect measurement may be a temperature or pressure. The temperature can be a lung temperature, a blood temperature or an organ temperature. The pressure may be a tracheal pressure or an alveolar pressure.

Indirect measurement in a total liquid ventilation system

A method for recovering energy during braking of a vehicle is provided. The vehicle has at least one rotatable ground engaging member, a generator operatively connected to the at least one rotatable ground engaging member, and at least one energy storage device coupled to the generator. The method has the steps of: determining a speed of the vehicle; determining a desired slip of the at least one rotatable ground engaging member based at least in part on the speed of the vehicle; and applying a braking torque to the at least one rotatable ground engaging member using the generator based at least in part on the desired slip. A regenerative braking system for a vehicle and a vehicle having such a system are also disclosed.

Regenerative braking system and method

The invention relates to a method for providing a structural condition of a structure, comprising providing an excitation wave generator; providing an excitation wave sensor; injecting an excitation burst wave into the structure using the excitation wave generator; obtaining a measured propagated excitation burst wave using the excitation wave sensor; correlating the measured propagated excitation burst wave with one of a plurality of theoretical dispersed versions of the excitation burst wave; and providing an indication of the structural condition of the structure corresponding to the correlated measured propagated excitation burst wave. The method may offer a better localization of the reflection points and thus of the potential defects present in a structure under inspection, when compared with a group velocity-based or time-of-flight (ToF) approach. The method may be particularly useful for structural health monitoring (SHM) and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). The method may also enable determination of the mechanical properties of the structure.

Method and apparatus for providing a structural condition of a structure

A vehicle has an engine having a crankshaft, a hydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch operatively connected to the crankshaft, and an output shaft operatively connected to the clutch. The clutch selectively transmits power from the crankshaft to the output shaft. A propulsion element is operatively connected to the output shaft. A hydraulic fluid supply system is fluidly connected to the clutch for supplying pressurized hydraulic fluid to the clutch. A controller is connected to the hydraulic fluid supply system. The controller receives a torque signal indicative of engine torque and controls the hydraulic fluid supply system based at least in part on the torque signal. A clutch control method and system are also disclosed.

Vehicle clutch control method

A method of applying total liquid ventilation to a patient according to a ventilation cycle including inspiration and expiration profiles, comprises supplying oxygenated liquid to the patient's lungs, withdrawing liquid from the patient's lungs, and controlling independently supply of oxygenated liquid to the patient's lungs and withdrawal of liquid from the patient's lungs. This supply and withdrawal independent control comprises producing a ventilation cycle having independently controlled inspiration and expiration profiles. To carry out the method, a total liquid ventilator system comprises an inspiration pump for supplying oxygenated liquid to the patient's lungs, and an expiration pump for withdrawing liquid from the patient's lungs. A ventilation cycle control comprises first and second pump controllers connected to the inspiration and expiration pumps, respectively, to produce a ventilation cycle having independently controlled inspiration and expiration profiles.

Method and apparatus for conducting total liquid ventilation with control of residual volume and ventilation cycle profile

The invention makes it possible to measure, in real time, the flow of a fluid that is incompressible while having an unsteady flow. The pressure measuring system is primarily comprised of a negative-pressure element () placed within the flow and provided with two wall pressure taps (A, B). A means () for measuring a pressure difference connected to the pressure taps (A, B) enables the following formula to be solved: dq(t)/dt+&#x3b1;(q(t))=&#x3b2;&#xd7;&#x394;p(t) directly stemming from fundamental equations of fluid mechanics and/or: &#x394;p(t) represents the pressure difference measured by the sensor; q(t) represents the sought volume flow rate, and; &#x3b1; represents a function of the geometry of the negative-pressure element, of the fluid and of the flow q(t), the particularity of this formula being the consideration of the direction of flow in the second term of the left member of the formula.
