Coupling devices and related methods are disclosed herein, e.g., for coupling a surgical instrument to a navigation array or other component. The coupling device can reduce or eliminate movement between the instrument and the navigation array, improving navigation precision. The coupling device can be quick and easy to use, reducing or eliminating the need for extra steps or additional tools to attach or detach the instrument from the coupling device. In some embodiments, the single step of inserting an instrument into the coupling device can automatically lock the instrument within the coupling device in a toggle-free manner. The coupling device can include features for consistently attaching instruments thereto at a known or predetermined location and/or orientation.

Coupling devices for surgical instruments and related methods

A coupling and related methods are disclosed herein that can provide for coupling a first object and a second object with minimal play. A coupling can include a first coupling component having a cylindrical surface with a screw and a pin extending therefrom and a second coupling component having a prismatic surface with a first and a second through-hole. The first coupling component and the second coupling component can be configured such that relative motion between the first coupling component and the second coupling component can be restricted in all six degrees of freedom when the screw is engaged with the first through-hole to secure the cylindrical surface of the first component against the prismatic surface of the second component. The pin can be configured to maintain stability of the coupling and further limit relative movement, such that positioning and/or orientation errors between the first and second components is minimized.

Instrument coupling interfaces and related methods

A retractor includes a first arm, a second arm, and a translating member. The first arm comprises a proximal portion configured to retain a first retractor member and a distal portion configured to rotate relative to the proximal portion about a first axis. The second arm is configured to retain a second retractor member, such that rotation of the distal portion about the first axis causes the first retractor member to pivot toward or away from the second retractor member when the first retractor member and the second retractor member are coupled to the first arm and the second arm, respectively. The translating member is coupled between the proximal portion and the distal portion, and is configured to receive a drive force that causes the translating member to bias the distal portion to pivot relative to the proximal portion about the first axis.

Spine access retractor

An intervertebral implant includes an insertion end, an opposing engagement end, and first and second opposed main surfaces configured to contact respective adjacent vertebral endplates. Each of the first and second main surfaces has an anterior edge, a posterior edge, and extends between the insertion and engagement ends. Anterior and posterior walls are formed between the first and second main surfaces and along the respective anterior and posterior edges and converge at the insertion and engagement ends. A slot is formed at the engagement end and extends continuously between and at least partially along the anterior and posterior walls. A post is positioned within the slot, spaced from at least one of the anterior and posterior walls and extending at least partially between the first and second main surfaces. The post includes a plurality of exposed facets and is configured for engagement with a pivotable insertion instrument.

Self-pivoting spinal implant and associated instrumentation

Couplings disclosed herein can include a first coupling component having a cylindrical surface with a screw and a pin extending therefrom and a second coupling component having a prismatic surface with a first and a second through-hole. Spinal access retractor

Instruments can include coupling interfaces that can b used, for example, for coupling a surgical instrument to a navigation array or other component. An exemplary coupling can include a first coupling interface associated with a first object, such as a surgical instrument, and a second coupling interface associated with a second object, such as a navigation array. The coupling interfaces can be configured to ensure that, when mated, the first and second objects are disposed in a known position and orientation relative to one another and blocked from relative movement in all six degrees of freedom. The interfaces can have a geometry that is not overdetermined, minimizing or eliminating navigation inaccuracy associated with system tolerances. An exemplary coupling can include counterpart centering features for blocking X-axis translation and Y-axis translation, counterpart rotation stops for blocking Z-axis rotation, counterpart reference planes for blocking X-axis rotation, Y-axis rotation, and Z-axis translation in a first direction, and a locking element for blocking Z-axis translation in a second, opposite direction.

An implant includes a body sized and shaped for insertion into a facet joint, the implant including a first bone fixation element receiving opening extending through a portion thereof along a first axis oriented so that, when the implant is received within a facet joint in a desired configuration, a bone fixation element inserted into the first bone fixation element receiving opening will extend into a first one of the vertebra forming the facet joint.
