A device for unstacking flat objects comprises an unstacking head (2) provided with a suction cup (88) for grasping the first flat object in a stack of such objects presented thereto and for moving a grasped flat object towards an exit position (40) in which the object is released. The suction cup (88) is a bellows suction cup made of a flexible material such that when it grasps the first flat object in the stack, it retracts under the effect of the suction and entrains at least the surface of the grasped object therewith as it retracts. A shoe (90) having a surface close to the grasping plane of the suction cup is disposed adjacent to the suction cup in fixed relationship relative to the mount (50) carrying the suction cup. The shoe thus constitutes an obstacle to the surface of a grasped flat object, thereby warping said surface as the suction cup retracts.

A method of extracting and accelerating flat objects such as postal items which are presented in the outlet position of an unstacking head for use by a machine downstream therefrom, the method making use of a clamp for grasping postal items one-by-one and of various sensors (7) such as photoelectric cells, serving to indicate the presence of a postal item in the outlet position of the unstacking head, or in the field of action of the clamp, or serving to indicate that the clamp is in a waiting position or in an end-of-stroke position, the method being characterized in that it essentially comprises the following stages:

Method of extracting and accelerating flat objects

A holder for selectively manipulating small format flat objects and large format flat objects comprises a support assembly adapted to pivot between two stable positions. This assembly is formed by first and second members attached perpendicularly to respective opposite sides of a third member. The first and third members form an L-shaped support for large format objects in one of the two stable positions. The second and third members form a T-shaped assembly. A base has an inclined end portion on which the support assembly is pivotally mounted at a point between the second member and the point at which the first member and the second member are attached together. As a result, the support assembly pivots about an axis which is substantially coincident with the intersection of the second and third members. A first of the two stable positions is defined by an abutting relationship between the inclined end portion of the base and the second member. In this position the L-shaped support is at the end of the base, facing the user. The second of the two stable positions is defined by an abutting relationship between the inclined end portion of the base and the part of the second member to which the first member is attached. In this position the half of the T-shaped assembly to which the first member is not attached is at the end of the base, facing the user and forming a support for the small format objects. Selectively operable first and second locking devices lock the support assembly into the two stable positions. They comprise magnets adapted to hold the second member and the third member against the end portion of the base.

Holder for manipulating flat objects

An unstacking device for objects such as mail envelopes is of the type comprising a magazine for storing and feeding stacked objects and a discharge head for separately removing jogged objects from a stack. The device is provided within the terminal portion of the magazine with a transition edge guide which serves to restore inclined objects to a practically upright position for subsequent discharge and is inclined with respect to the direction of feed motion of stacked objects and with a jogging reference edge guide which is relatively displaced towards the exterior of the magazine. There are associated with the edge guides a feed screw for advancing objects and a delay screw for retarding objects, the screws being interposed between jogging rollers opposite to the edge guides.
