Disclosed is a process for removing nitro phenols from aqueous effluent streams comprising adding chlorine dioxide to the effluent stream in an amount sufficient to substantially degrade the nitro phenolic contaminant. The process of the instant invention is particularly suitable for removing dinitro cresols from the oily effluent streams of petrochemical operations.

A process for removing residual monomer from styrene based polymers is disclosed which comprises adding a sulfonylhydrazide having the general formula: ##STR1## where: R.sub.1 is H or an alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 is H or a --SO.sub.2 --NH--NH.sub.2, in which case R.sub.1 is H; and symmetric sulfonylhydrazides of the general formulae: ##STR2## where: X is --O--, --S--, --CH.sub.2 -- or --SO.sub.2 -- and mixtures thereof to the polymer resin. A process for the oxidation of aliphatic secondary alcohols having no tertiary hydrogen on a carbon atom in alpha position relative to the carbon atom linked to the hydroxyl group, with selective formation of ketones having the same number of carbon atoms, said process comprising contacting said alcohols with a cobalt salt having a trivalent cobalt to total cobalt ratio of between 0.5 and 1, the concentration of said cobalt salt being at least 0.05 mole per liter of reaction mixture, at a temperature between 20.degree. and 120.degree. C.

Process for the oxidation of secondary alcohols into ketones

A process for the oxidation, in the presence of a cobalt salt, of straight-chain paraffinic compounds of general formula ##STR1## wherein n is an integer from 1 to 16 inclusive, Y.sup.1 is hydrogen or a substituent selected from the group consisting of X, CN, COOR and OCOR, wherein X is a halogen and R a hydrocarbon radical containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms inclusive and Y.sup.2 is selected from the group consisting of Y.sup.1, CHX.sub.2 and CX.sub.3, and wherein Y.sup.1 is hydrogen when Y.sup.2 is CX.sub.3 or is X when Y.sup.2 is selected from the group consisting of CX.sub.3 and CHX.sub.2, with the selective formation of monoketones, having the same number of carbon atoms as the starting compound and of the general formula: ##STR2## wherein n, Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 are as defined above, the process comprising contacting said paraffinic compounds with a cobalt salt having a trivalent cobalt to the total cobalt ratio between 0.5 and 1.0, based on metal cobalt, the concentration of said cobalt salt being at least 0.05 mole per liquid liter of reaction mixture, at a temperature between 20.degree. and 120.degree. C., and in the presence of molecular oxygen.

Process for the selective oxidation of paraffinic hydrocarbons

A process for the production of ethylphenol comprising the oxidation of diethylbenzene into diethylbenzene monohydroperoxide, withdrawing the reaction mixture, separating the unconverted diethylbenzene therefrom to obtain a hydroperoxide concentrate containing at least 40% of diethylbenzene monohydroperoxide, mixing said concentrate with a solvent selected from the group consisting of the lower molecular weight aliphatic alcohols and ketones, decomposing said hydroperoxide by intimate contact with a strong acid, hydrogenating the decomposition mixture and recovering ethylphenol from the hydrogenated mixture.

Production of ethylphenols

A process for producing ethylphenol comprising reacting in liquid phase, diethylbenzene with a molecular oxygen containing gas, at a temperature between 100.degree. and 180.degree.C, until 5 to 30% of the diethylbenzene feed is converted into diethylbenzene hydroperoxide, withdrawing the reaction mixture, evaporating the unconverted diethylbenzene therefrom to obtain a concentrate containing at least 40% of diethylbenzene hydroperoxide, and recycling the unconverted diethylbenzene to the oxidation stage, mixing the diethylbenzene hydroperoxide concentrate with a solvent selected from the group consisting of low molecular weight aliphatic alcohols, ketones and mixtures thereof, decomposing said hydroperoxide by intimate contact with a strong acid which is used in an amount of between 0.05 and 5% of the weight of total reaction mixture, neutralizing the resulting mixture and thereafter distilling the neutralized mixture to recover a bottom fraction containing ethylphenol and an overhead fraction containing acetaldehyde, and treating said ethylphenol fraction with a compound reactive to the ketones within said fraction and thereafter distilling such treated fraction to obtain ethylphenol substantially free of ketonic impurities.

Process for producing ethylphenols

A process for the oxidation of a diethylbenzene feed which comprises passing a molecular oxygen containing gas into contact with said feed at a temperature between 100.degree. and 180.degree.C in the presence of a superbasic sulfonate of an alkaline-earth metal in an amount within the range of 0.01 to 5% by weight of the diethylbenzene feed.
