An apparatus and method is presented for controlling the quality of a mass density measurement of a multiphase fluid mixture including a plurality of fluid fractions and a plurality of constituting elements. The method includes the steps of: submitting a measuring pipe to a flux of high energy photons and measuring count rates; determining a mass density of the multiphase fluid mixture based on count rate measurements in a first and second energy windows; determining an electronic density of the multiphase fluid mixture based on count rate measurements in a third energy window; and comparing the electronic density to the mass density of the multiphase fluid mixture.

Apparatus and method for determining a characteristic ratio and a parameter affecting the characterisitic ratio of a multiphase fluid mixture

The invention relates to a method of characterizing an oil borehole effluent, formed by a multiphase fluid mixture typically containing water, oil, and gas. According to the invention, a gadolinium 153 source is used to emit gamma rays at a first energy level of about 100 keV and at a second energy level of about 40 keV, and the attenuation of the gamma rays at these two energy levels is measured after the rays have passed through the effluent.

Method and device for characterizing oil borehole effluents

The invention relates to a method of measuring the absorption of a photon flux in the fluid flowing in an oil well, for the purpose of determining the composition of the fluid. The invention also relates to a logging sonde for implementing such method. The photon flux produced by a source such as an X-ray generator irradiates the entire volume of fluid surrounding the sonde, and the energy of the photons is lower than a predetermined value, preferably 100 kev, so that the walls of the well are capable of substantially absorbing the photons impinging thereon. The photon flux includes an energy level at which photoelectric absorption is significant and another energy level at which Thomson scattering is predominant. Measurements of the photoelectric absorption coefficient and density are used to determine water, oil, and salinity.

Method and apparatus for analyzing well fluids by photon irradiation

In accordance with an illustrative embodiment of the present invention, a method and apparatus is disclosed for determining the presence of a selected number of naturally radioactive materials in an earth formation from the spectrum of natural gamma radiation emitted by the materials in the formation by deriving representations of portions of the detected gamma radiation spectrum and combining the representations to determine therefrom the presence of the selected materials.
