A telecommunications system includes a personal item held by a user of the system, a first means of communication made available to the user and capable of communicating with the personal item and with a data transfer network, and a second means of communication capable of communicating with the data transfer network and belonging to an interlocutor of the user. The first means of communication may be triggered between a non-transparent operating mode and a transparent operating mode during which it is incapable of acting on data passing through it. The system makes it possible to guarantee the user that the confidential data he may send will not be altered or saved by the first means of communication in view of its illicit use.

This invention relates to a radio communication terminal, such as for example, a mobile telephone, which has access to a satellite-based communication network. In the course of one and the same communication, the terminal transmits information via an up pathway and receives information via a down pathway. One of the two pathways, up or down, is cellular and the other pathway is satellite-based.

The system comprises a processor, a routing unit (3), linked to the procer, in order to be linked to a line (10) of a telephone network (11) and to an associated telephone handset (12), a modem (4) linked to the processor and to the routing unit (3), an analysis and printing assembly and a control console, which are linked to the processor. A Minitel videotex terminal is connected to the processor of a facsimile machine and internal switches are controlled in response to activation of a man-machine interface key to permit the higher speed modem of the facsimile machine to be selectively utilized in lieu of the slower speed modem of the Minitel terminal. The arrangement permits other components of the Minitel terminal and the facsimile machine to operate in selective combinations.

The facsimile machine comprises a processor 10, a modem 18, a switch 20 cecting to a data transmission line 8, means for connecting to at least one main telephone set 7, switches 6, 61 connecting the telephone set 7 to the data transmission line 8, a module 17 recognizing the nature of the incoming calls, and a printer 14. The modem 18 is a combined modem of fax and videotex. Means 10 are provided so that in case of connection between videotex modem part 18 and the data transmission line 8, the events on line 8 shall be detected and their nature recognized, and thus the line 8 shall be routed onto the facsimile modem part or the videotex modem part 18 as a function of the nature of these events.
