A handheld work apparatus has a housing with a guide bar affixed thereto. A saw chain is driven along the guide bar which defines a central plane. A drive element for the chain is in a sprocket wheel space delimited by a sprocket wheel cover. The cover has a longitudinal edge which delimits the space adjacent to a first side of the saw chain. The longitudinal edge has a length from an entry region to a discharge opening. Over at least 50% of this length, the longitudinal edge is at a distance (L) to the housing. The distance (L) corresponds to the chain width (a). The distance of the longitudinal edge of the cover increases at the discharge opening in the running direction of the first side. The largest distance (b) of the longitudinal edge to the central plane is at least 110% of the smallest distance (c).

Handheld work apparatus

A work apparatus has an engine with a carburetor. An actuating element is connected to the choke shaft of the choke element of the carburetor. An operating mode selector has operating, warm start and cold start positions and is connected fixedly in terms of rotation to an adjusting element. The actuating element is pivoted through a pivot angle (&#x3b1;) from the operating position into the warm start position and through a pivot angle (&#x3b1;) from the warm start position into the cold start position. The selector is pivoted through a pivot angle (&#x3b3;) from the operating position into the warm start position and through a pivot angle (&#x3b3;) from the warm start position into the cold start position. The ratio of the pivot angle (&#x3b1;) to the pivot angle (&#x3b1;) is at least approximately 1.5 times the ratio of the pivot angle (&#x3b3;) to the pivot angle (&#x3b3;).

Carburetor arrangement

A manually guided implement having an internal combustion engine and a carburetor for supplying the engine with a fuel/air mixture is provided. A combustion air stream is drawn in through the carburetor by the engine. A warming medium heated up by the engine can be passed along the outer surfaces of the carburetor separate from the combustion air stream.

The invention relates to a portable handheld work apparatus such as a motor-driven chain saw having an internal combustion engine mounted in a housing for driving a work tool. A cooling-air blower is mounted on one side of the housing. The cooling-air blower is covered by a blower cover having air-intake openings. The blower cover has a bearing lug facing toward the cooling-air blower. A pull-rope starter for starting the engine is held on the bearing lugs and the housing of the pull-rope starter is attached to the blower cover. The pull-rope starter housing is configured as a component separate from the blower cover in order to minimize the disturbance of the cooling-air inflow by the pull-rope starter housing. This component is attached at a spacing to the air-intake openings of the blower.
