A method according to one embodiment includes forming at least two write transducers for writing to a magnetic medium, the at least two write transducers being positioned adjacent each other and aligned along a line; and forming a shield structure having shields adjacent at least three sides of each of the at least two write transducers, the shields being formed of a magnetically-permeable material.

Method of making magnetically-shielded write transducers

A method according to one embodiment includes forming a first portion of a thin film writer structure on a substrate, forming a portion of a write gap at an initial position, a plane of deposition of the portion of the write gap being at an angle of greater than 0&#xb0; and less than 90&#xb0; relative to an upper surface of the first portion in the initial position, moving the writer structure to orient the plane of deposition of the portion of the write gap more toward perpendicular to a plane corresponding to a final media-facing surface of the writer structure than the orientation of the plane of deposition of the portion of the write gap in the initial position, and fixing the writer structure in place after the moving.

Methods for fabricating magnetic writer structures using post-deposition tilting

A method according to one embodiment includes recessing a portion of a media facing side of a module, the module having first and second transducers of different magnetic transducer types positioned towards the media facing side of the module, wherein the different transducer types are selected from a group consisting of data reader transducers, servo reader transducers, write transducers, piggyback read-write transducers and merged read-write transducers; wherein the recess is positioned towards one of the first transducers, wherein the recess forms a first protection structure for protecting the first transducer; and wherein the second transducer has either no protection or is protected by a second protection structure that is different than the first protection structure.

Method of forming magnetic recording head having protected reader sensors and near zero recession writer poles

A method according to one embodiment includes forming a lower shield of a shield structure; forming a portion of a magnetic yoke for each of at least two write transducers above the lower shield of the shield structure; and forming an upper shield of the shield structure above the portions of the yokes of each of two of the at least two write transducers, the shields being formed of a magnetically permeable material, wherein the upper and lower shields are magnetically connected.

A mechanism is provided for an integrated laminated magnetic device. A substrate and a multilayer stack structure form the device. The multilayer stack structure includes alternating magnetic layers and diode structures formed on the substrate. Each magnetic layer in the multilayer stack structure is separated from another magnetic layer in the multilayer stack structure by a diode structure.

A computer program product for orienting a head includes a computer readable storage medium having program instructions embodied therewith. The program instructions are readable and/or executable by a controller to cause the controller to: determine a desired pitch for transducers for reading and/or writing to a magnetic tape; and cause a mechanism to orient a head to achieve the desired pitch. The array of a first of the modules is offset from the array of a second of the modules in a first direction parallel to the axis of the array of the second module such that the transducers of the first module are about aligned with the transducers of the second module in the intended direction of tape travel thereacross when the axes are oriented at an angle greater than 0.2&#xb0; relative to a line oriented perpendicular to the intended direction of tape travel.

The apparatus also includes a first protection structure for protecting the first transducer. The second transducer is protected by a second protection structure that is different than the first protection structure. The second protection structure includes a recessed portion of the media facing side adjacent the second transducer. An extent of recession of the recessed portion of the media facing side adjacent the second transducer is not as great as an extent of recession of the recessed portion of the media facing side adjacent the first transducer.

In one general embodiment, an apparatus includes at least two modules, each of the modules having an array of transducers, wherein the at least two modules are fixed relative to each other, wherein an axis of each array is defined between opposite ends thereof, wherein the axes of the arrays are oriented about parallel to each other, wherein the array of a first of the modules is offset from the array of a second of the modules in a first direction parallel to the axis of the array of the second module such that the transducers of the first module are about aligned with the transducers of the second module in an intended direction of tape travel thereacross; and a mechanism for orienting the modules about an axis orthogonal to the plane in which the arrays reside to control a transducer pitch presented to a tape.

A magnetic device according to one embodiment includes a source of flux and a magnetic yoke coupled to the source of flux. The source of flux includes a thin film coil having multiple turns. The magnetic yoke has a pole with two or more gaps, wherein the coil turns have a non-uniform placement in the magnetic yoke for creating a higher magnetic field at one of the gaps than another of the gaps during writing. A magnetic device according to another embodiment includes a source of flux. A geometry of the magnetic pole near or at one of the gaps is different than a geometry of the magnetic pole near or at another of the gaps to help equalize fields formed at the gaps when the source of flux is generating flux.

In one embodiment, an apparatus includes at least first and second modules, a mechanism for orienting the modules to control a transducer pitch presented to a tape, and a controller physically configured to determine a state of expansion of the tape based on a readback signal from the tape. Each of the modules have an array of transducers. The first and second modules are fixed relative to each other. The transducers of the first module are about aligned with the transducers of the second module in an intended direction of tape travel thereacross when longitudinal axes of the arrays are oriented at an angle greater than 0.2&#xb0; relative to a line oriented perpendicular to the intended direction of tape travel. The controller is physically configured to control the mechanism for altering the angle of the modules away from the nominal angle based on the state of expansion of the tape.
