A system for calibrating the light sensitivity of a camera includes a light emitter for emitting a light pulse, a fiber splitter for receiving the light pulse via an input port and providing first and second portions of the light pulse to respective first and second output ports, and a light collector for receiving the first portion from the first output port and converting the first portion to a first signal representative of a light characteristic of the first portion. A first fiber optic cable connects the light emitter and the input port, a second fiber optic cable connects the first output port and the light collector, and a third fiber optic cable has a first cable end connected with the second output port and a second cable end for emitting the second portion of the light pulse for capture by the camera. A related method is also provided.

System and method for calibrating the light sensitivity of a camera

An optical-based fire detection system has a fire detecting mode in which the system is monitoring a flammable region for occurrence of fire in the flammable region and a system calibrating mode in which functionality of the system can be verified. The system comprises a light signal collecting unit located inside of the flammable region. The system also comprises a light signal processing unit located outside of the flammable region. The system further comprises a light signal calibrating unit located outside of the flammable region. The system also comprises one or more optical fiber bundles optically interconnecting the collecting unit, the processing unit, and the calibrating unit. The optical interconnections, when the fire detection system is in the fire detecting mode, enable the processing unit to receive at least one light signal from the collecting unit and to process one or more characteristics of the at least one light signal to determine if the at least one light signal is indicative of a fire in the flammable region. The optical interconnections, when the fire detection is in the system calibrating mode, enable the processing unit to receive at least one calibrating light signal from the calibrating unit and to process the at least one calibrating light signal to verify functionality of the collecting unit and thereby to verify functionality of the optical-based fire detection system.

Optical-based fire detection systems and methods

A method for modeling a new design for electromagnetic effects includes identifying, with a model based system engineering tool, an area of interest in the new design where a lightning strike may occur. The new design includes structural features and electromagnetic features. The method further includes generating, with an electromagnetic effects solver tool and a structural solver tool, a design model for the area of interest in the new design, extracting design parameters from the design model, and generating a reduced order model by processing the design parameters, test results, and simulation results with a modeling tool. The reduced order model couples the structural features with the electromagnetic features. The test results are determined by tests of known designs. The simulation results are determined by simulations of known models. The method further includes storing the reduced order model in a storage medium that is readable by a statistical modeling tool.

An assembly for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding to prevent incident radiation from penetrating through a gap to an interior of an aircraft includes an electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure. The EBG structure has a patch-and-via array connected to a ground layer. The EMI shielding includes a conductive adhesive and is flexible for conforming attachment to curved aircraft surfaces. The shielding may be located on a deflector plate that is parallel to an adjacent aircraft surface, on the airframe surface opposite to the deflector plate, or in both locations. The assembly filters out penetrating electromagnetic energy and prevents highly resonant cavity mode build-ups of electromagnetic energy inside a nacelle or other enclosure effectively protecting electrical equipment in the interior.

The embodiments described herein provide for lightning protection in aircrafts constructed with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP). In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a first Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) panel, a second CFRP panel that overlaps with the first CFRP panel in a vertical direction, and a fastener to join the first CFRP panel with the second CFRP panel, the fastener extending in the vertical direction in an area where the first CFRP panel and the second CFRP panel overlap. The apparatus further includes a plurality of electrically conductive pins in each of the first CFRP panel and the second CFRP panel, wherein the pins extend in the vertical direction proximate to the fastener to electrically connect the first CFRP panel and the second CFRP panel in the area where the first CFRP panel and the second CFRP panel overlap.

Lightning protection in aircrafts constructed with carbon fiber reinforced plastic

An ignition suppressing enclosure configured to contain an ignition source is disclosed and includes a body portion defining an inner surface, an outer surface, and an enclosed volume containing a flammable gaseous mixture. The enclosed volume is sized to contain the ignition source. The enclosed volume of the ignition suppressing enclosure is surrounded by an exterior combustible environment also containing the flammable gaseous mixture. The ignition suppressing enclosure includes one or more vent paths that extend between the inner surface and the outer surface of the body portion, where each individual vent path includes an effective diameter based on at least a minimum ignition energy of the flammable gaseous mixture. The effective diameter of the individual vent path is selected to quench a flame that occurs within the enclosed volume of the ignition suppressing enclosure.

A method for testing physical properties of a material includes inserting coherent light into a waveguide such that the coherent light exits the waveguide at an end of the waveguide that is embedded within the material, thereby causing the coherent light to interact with the material. The method also includes detecting a reaction of the material to the coherent light.

Test fixture and method for use

Gas-flammability sensing systems and methods may be used to determine the flammability of gas mixtures in measurement volumes such as a fuel tank (e.g., an aircraft fuel tank). Gas-flammability sensing systems include a test cell structured to receive a gas sample, a heater in thermal communication with the test cell, and a gas meter configured to measure a physical property of the gas sample within the test cell related to the combustion state of the gas sample. The heater is configured to heat the gas sample to an elevated temperature less than the autoignition temperature of the gas sample. Methods of determining the flammability of a gas sample include collecting the gas sample, heating the gas sample to the elevated temperature, measuring the physical property of the gas sample after heating, and determining the flammability of a gas sample based upon the measured physical property.

Phase change material modules for use in a heat exchanger are described. The phase change material module comprises two or more set of a plurality of substantially aligned hollow structures arranged to form a porous structure. A phase change material capable of undergoing a phase change as a result of heat exchange between it and a fluid is housed within the hollow tubes. Also described is a phase change material module with hollow tubes having a cross-sectional area through the phase change material selected from elliptical, rectangular, stadium-shaped, teardrop-shaped, airfoil-shaped, rounded rectangle and ovoid. A heat exchanger comprising a plurality of the phase change material modules, a first fluid inlet and outlet, and a second fluid inlet and outlet, wherein the phase change material modules are repeated circulated from alignment with the first fluid inlet and the second fluid inlet is also described.
