An apparatus includes a communication interface, a controller, and a power section. The communication interface is configured to receive power from an external host to the apparatus. The controller is configured to limit a current drawn by the communication interface to a predetermined value when the apparatus is powered through the external host. The power section is configured to generate a first voltage from a portion of the limited current drawn by the communication interface. The first voltage powers a data storage circuitry. The power section is further configured to store electrical charges received from another portion of the limited current drawn by the communication interface. The power section is further configured to generate a second voltage from the stored electrical charges in response to a signal from the controller. The second voltage supplements the first voltage during high power events by the data storage circuitry.

Portable storage device with charge reservoir for higher current operations

Methods for charging a battery of a portable device can include increasing the charge current for the battery, where the charge current sourced from electrical power received at a connector of a portable device. If a voltage at the connector drops below a predetermined value, setting a charge current limit to a level less than that corresponding to the voltage drop. If the voltage at the connector does not drop below the predetermined value, setting the charge current limit to a predetermined level. The charge current limit can be stored, and the battery can be charged with the charge current having a maximum value determined by the charge current limit. One or more application circuits of the portable device can be selectively disabled based on the charge current limit.

Portable device battery charging circuits and methods

Devices having battery charge control circuits are disclosed. Such devices can include power control circuits operable to receive electrical power at a connector, and provide power to electrical components, including a charge current for a rechargeable battery; and a controller circuit configured to determine and store a maximum charge current setting based on whether a voltage at the connector falls below a predetermined limit as the charge current is increased. Corresponding methods are also disclosed.

An apparatus includes a rechargeable battery, a circuitry, and a controller. The circuitry is operable to receive power from a power source and to provide power to the rechargeable battery and to other electrical components of the apparatus. The controller is configured to monitor power requirements of the apparatus. Moreover, the controller is further configured to provide power from the rechargeable battery in addition to power supplied from the power source during a peak power event of the apparatus.
