An apparatus is disclosed for winding a paper web from a rotatable drum onto a driven spool which supports a reel. The apparatus includes a frame which includes a base having a first and a second end. A stand extends from the first end of the base for rotatably supporting the drum so that the paper web is guided by the drum. A further stand extends from the second end of the base. A carriage is slidably supported by the base such that sliding of the carriage between the first and second ends of the base is permitted. A moving device extends between the carriage and the further stand for moving the carriage relative to the drum. A reel in position control device is controllably connected to the moving device for selectively moving the carriage towards and away from the drum. The arrangement is such that when the reel supported by the driven spool is mounted on the carriage and the paper web is guided by the drum onto the reel, the paper web is controllably wound onto the core.

Apparatus for winding a paper web

A control apparatus is disclosed for controlling nip pressure in a nip of a metering size press. The apparatus includes a metering size press roll and a backing roll which cooperates with the size press roll for defining therebetween the nip. A support post is provided for rotatably supporting the backing roll. A linear bearing is disposed beneath the support post for mounting the support post. Also, a moving device is connected to the support post for moving the support post and the backing roll supported by the support post such that the supported backing roll and the support post mounted on the linear bearing is moved for controlling the nip pressure in the nip between the rolls.

Control apparatus

A mechanism and method for the continuous winding of a web of paper into rolls including a shear type load cell for measuring the horizontal component of the reactive force on the winding drum with the output of the load cell being used to control the nip pressure between the winding drum and the roll being wound. Another load cell measures the tension of the incoming paper web, and this measurement is subtracted to give the net nip pressure. An initial reading is taken when the core on which the web is to be wound is lowered onto the load cell and an initial reading is taken to provide the index point of the weight of the core and reel, and when the core is being pivoted downwardly over the drum, the vertical and horizontal components with the total nip load are calculated to control the nip load. Thus, the nip load is carefully controlled at all positions to provide an improved drum winder obtaining controlled nip load and controlled density of the roll being wound.
