An internal combustion engine includes an electromagnetic valve actuator having an armature between upper and lower electromagnets with a stem extending through one electromagnet and guided by a bushing with increased clearance about at least a portion of the inner circumference in at least a middle portion of the bushing to reduce oil shear length and associated viscous friction in the actuator. A two-piece intake/exhaust valve guide includes a lower half with a stepped outer diameter cooperating with a counter-bored hole in the cylinder head to provide a positive stop. The upper and lower halves of the valve guide have increased clearance relative to the valve stem around at least a portion of the inner circumference to reduce oil shear length and associated viscous friction. Reducing viscous friction of the actuator and associated valve guide improves system robustness by decreasing the system sensitivity to temperature.

Operation of electrically actuated valves at lower temperatures

An extendible rail and bumper apparatus is mountable within the base frame lower rails of an automotive frame to provide an improved crash force absorbing bumper apparatus for deployment on either the front or rear bumpers of an automobile. The extendible rail member is mounted for telescopic movement through slidable guide members. A front plate is formed with wedge members positioned next to the extendible rail member. The actuation mechanism includes an electric motor that rotates a threaded rod having a conical member mounted thereon for translational movement thereon. The conical member engages a pair of outwardly projectable tabs that are driven outwardly into engagement with the wedge members when the extendible rail is fully extended. If required to absorb impact energy, the outwardly projected tabs push the wedge members into engagement with the front plate to transfer the energy into the base frame rail apparatus of the vehicle.

An electrical connector for mounting to an electronically controlled valve assembly of an internal combustion engine and for electrically connecting the valve assembly to a control system for the engine. The electrical connector has disposed in a housing thereof: a plurality of high current conductors for carrying relatively high current to the electromagnet coils of the valve assembly and a plurality of low current conductors for carrying relatively low current valve position sensing signals from the valve assembly; and a pair of electrical shields, one of the pair of shields being disposed around the plurality of high current conductors and the other one of the pair of shields being disposed around the plurality of low current conductors.

The fluid-containing chamber includes a first piston providing a first wall portion of the chamber and a second piston providing a second wall portion of the chamber. A hydraulic system for an electromechanical valve is provided. The system includes a housing defining a chamber for holding fluid extending along an axis. The system further includes a damper stem disposed in the chamber configured to move along the axis. The damper stem is configured to be directly coupled to the valve member. The system further includes a piston coupled to the damper stem dividing the chamber into a first chamber portion and a second chamber portion. The housing includes a conduit extending between the first chamber portion and the second chamber portion. The conduit has a first non-cylindrical opening communicating with the first chamber portion. When the piston moves past at least a portion of the non-cylinder opening, the cross-sectional area of the opening decreases to restrict fluid flow from the first chamber to reduce a velocity of the piston.

A hybrid driveline for an automotive vehicle comprising an internal combustion engine and a power transmission mechanism for transferring torque to the traction wheels of the vehicle. An electric starter motor/alternator unit is situated between the torque input element of the automatic transmission and the crankshaft of the engine. A wet clutch disc assembly receives torque from the engine through a damper assembly. The torque output side of the clutch is connected to the rotor of the motor/alternator unit, which in turn is connected driveably to the torque input shaft of the transmission. The damper attenuates peak torque fluctuations of the internal combustion engine, thereby reducing the maximum torque transmitting requirements of the clutch. The damper and the clutch are arranged in a compact assembly within the stator and rotor of the motor/alternator unit.

Motor/alternator with integral wet clutch for use in hybrid vehicles

A control strategy for a hybrid powertrain for an automotive vehicle comprising an internal combustion engine, a geared transmission mechanism for transmitting driving torque to the vehicle traction wheels, and an electric motor arranged in parallel with respect to the internal combustion engine at the torque input side of the transmission. A friction clutch connects and disconnects the engine from the torque flow path as transitions are made between an electric motor driving mode and an engine driving mode. A mechanical damper is located on the torque input side of the clutch. A transition from the electric motor drive mode to the internal combustion engine drive mode is achieved by controlling the engagement of the clutch using a closed loop clutch pressure modulation strategy and controlling the fuel supply to the engine to effect an engine drive mode without triggering undesirable inertia torque fluctuations in the powertrain.
