In one embodiment, a lidar system includes a light source configured to emit a pulse of light and a scanner configured to direct the emitted pulse of light into a field of regard of the lidar system. The lidar system also includes a receiver configured to receive a portion of the emitted pulse of light scattered by a target located a distance from the lidar system. The receiver includes a digital micromirror device (DMD) that includes a two-dimensional array of electrically addressable micromirrors, where a portion of the micromirrors are configured to be set to an active-on state to direct the received pulse of light to a detector array. The detector array includes a two-dimensional array of detector elements, where the detector array is configured to detect the received pulse of light and produce an electrical signal corresponding to the received pulse of light.

A geospatial data collection system is for an aerial vehicle and includes a data collection light detection and ranging (LiDAR) device and a protection LiDAR device. The data collection LiDAR device is configured to collect geospatial data as the aerial vehicle moves along a collection path. The protection LiDAR device is configured to sense a geospatial area ahead of the data collection LiDAR device. The data collection LiDAR device is switchable from an operating mode to a protected mode based upon the protection LiDAR device.

Geospatial data collection system with a look ahead sensor and associated methods

A geospatial imaging system may include a geospatial data storage device configured to store a geospatial dataset including geospatial data points. A processor may cooperate with the geospatial data storage device to determine segments within the geospatial dataset, with each segment including neighboring geospatial data points within the geospatial dataset sharing a common geometric characteristic from among different geometric characteristics. The processor may further determine border geospatial data points of adjacent segments, compare the border geospatial data points of the adjacent segments to determine bare earth segments having respective heights below those of the border geospatial data points of adjacent segments, and classify geospatial data points within each bare earth segment as bare earth geospatial data points.
