In described examples, a spatial light modulator includes groups of pixels. Each group is arranged to transmit only a respective portion of a light spectrum. The respective portion has a respective dominant color. The respective portions of the light spectrum are distinct from one another, according to their respective dominant colors. Each group is controlled by a respective reset signal. The spatial light modulator is coupled to receive a selection from the integrated circuit and in response to the selection: cause a selected one of the groups to transmit its respective portion of the light spectrum; and cause an unselected one of the groups to block transmission of its respective portion of the light spectrum. A photodetector is coupled to: receive the respective portion of the light spectrum transmitted by the selected group; and output a signal indicating an intensity thereof.

Spatial light modulator spectroscopy

Apparatus and methods are disclosed for generating blue color illumination for use in a projection system. Light from a blue laser light source is reflected off a dichroic filter sequentially onto different color emitting phosphor coated light non-transmissive segments and onto a cyan color emitting phosphor coated light transmissive segment of a rotating color wheel. The different color light and cyan color light emitted by the phosphor back to the filter is selectively transmitted by the filter along a projection path. Blue laser light and cyan color light emitted by the phosphor transmitted through the color wheel is directed along a wraparound optical path back to the filter for reflection along the projection optical path.

Hybrid laser excited phosphor illumination apparatus and method

An illuminator for an imaging system using a spatial light modulator has first color laser light directed by a dichroic element to a first annular band on a rotatable member. The first band includes phosphor segments that respond to illumination by the first color light to emit second and third color light along a first path back to the dichroic element for output, and a light transmitting or reflecting segment that transmits or reflects the first color along the same or a second path back to the dichroic element for output. The output light is directed to a second annular band on the same or a different rotatable member. The second band includes filter segments corresponded to respectively selectively filter output light generated by the first band segments.

Color sequence illumination system with phosphor light filter

A method of controlling micromirrors of reset groups of a spatial light modulator (SLM) digital micromirror array is disclosed. In a first reset operation, the positions of a first subgroup of micromirrors of a reset group are set based on a first portion of a first bitplane and the positions of a second subgroup of micromirrors of the same reset group are set based on a first portion of a second bitplane. Then, in a second reset operation, the positions of the first subgroup are set based on a second portion of the second bitplane and the positions of the second subgroup are set based on a second portion of a first bitplane. In one example, subsets of alternating rows of micromirrors of the same reset group are successively set according to alternating data corresponding to different ones of first and second bitplanes.

Spatial and temporal pulse width modulation method for image display

An interactive display projection system, includes a pointing device which determines a location on the projected display indicated by the pointing device using a combination of a location signal in the display captured by the pointing device and optical mouse circuitry to determine motion of the pointing device when the pointing device is close to the projected display. In another embodiment, the pointing device also includes an inertial sensor and associated circuitry which detects linear accelerations and rotational rates to determine motion and orientation of the pointing device, which are also used to determine the location on the projected display indicated by the pointing device.

Enhanced projected image interface

A process of operating a PWM display system wherein some display data bits are assigned substantially equal time weights. Display data codewords are defined for every pixel intensity value to form display data codeword tables so that there are at least as many display data codeword tables as the number of display data bits with substantially equal time weights. The display pixel is subsequently operated in a digital manner according to the display data codeword in the selected display data codeword table to display a desired pixel intensity value. The display data codeword tables are configured so that immediately adjacent display pixels are operated so that identical pixel intensity values are displayed with different temporal sequences.

Spatially multiplexed pulse width modulation

A spoke synchronization technique allowing for lamp-pulsing synchronizes a spoke based on sub-arrays of a spatial light modulator. The lamp pulsing occurs during the spoke synchronization; and the lamp pulse for pulsing the lamp spans substantially across the entire spoke synchronization time period.

Spoke synchronization system with variable intensity illuminator

A method includes generating a plurality of beams that each illuminate a separate portion of a spatial light modulator. The spatial light modulator has a first dimension of a first length and a second dimension of a second length. Each of the beams spans a portion of the first length of the first dimension and a portion of the second length of the second dimension. The method also includes scrolling the plurality of beams along the second dimension of the spatial light modulator while maintaining at least a first gap between each of the plurality of beams.

System and method for utilizing a scanning beam to display an image

According to particular embodiments, a system comprises one or mores light sources, a Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) system, and a controller. A light source is configured to generate light, and the DMD system comprises DMD regions configured to modulate the light. The controller is configured to repeat the following for a number of iterations: instruct each light source to scroll the light across the DMD system at a current amplitude level; instruct one or more DMD regions to operate as one or more active regions that modulate a first portion of the light to generate an image; and instruct the remaining DMD regions to operate as an amplitude modulation region that receives a second portion of the light, the second portion of the light transitioning from a previous amplitude level to the current amplitude level.
