A composition which is a uniform blend of 50-90 weight % of a polyamide melt-processable within the temperature range of 180.degree.-210.degree. C. and 50-10 weight % of recovered plasticized polyvinylbutyral, optionally also containing a small amount of an elastomeric ethylene copolymer carrying pendant succinic anhydride groups, has high impact strength and good flexural modulus. The polyamide in these compositions forms the matrix, and the plasticized polyvinylbutyral and any elastomer present form the dispersed phase. Such compositions have good barrier properties and are useful, among others, in applications where good toughness is required, for example, in packaging subjected to rough handling.

Toughened semi-crystalline thermoplastic polyester molding compositions consisting essentially of a polyester resin and an ionomer of ethylene, a softening comonomer and unsaturated carboxylic acid, such as ethylene/n-butyl acrylate/methacrylic acid.

Toughened thermoplastic polyester compositions

A blend consisting essentially of a major portion of an amorphous polyamide and a minor portion of an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer exhibits gas barrier properties which are less dependent on humidity than are those of either of the component polymers. Films and laminated structures which incorporate the material of these blends are suitable for use as packaging materials.

Melt fabrication, with precompounding, of a plurality of thermoplastic resins, is provided by use of a screw having a dispersion section in such machines as injection molding machines. The minor resin component can be an elastomer, which toughens the resin's major component. This effect is improved by increasing back pressure on the screw used in the injection molding machine, to extend the screw rotation and thus shear time accomplished by the dispersion section.

Direct fabrication

Polymeric blends particularly useful as adhesives for nylon prepared from an ethylene polymer and a second polymer grafted with maleic anhydride.
