An imaging system images a sample across one or more wavelengths. A light source illuminates a sample with one or more wavelengths of light, and an image sensor detects light from the illuminated sample. A linear variable long pass filter is positioned to filter light reflected from the sample to pass to the image sensor multiple different wavelength bands having different cut-off wavelengths. Wavelengths of light on one side of the cut-off wavelength are blocked and wavelengths of light on the other side of the cut-off wavelength are passed as multiple different long pass wavelength bands for detection by the image sensor. The image sensor detects light for each of the multiple different long pass wavelength bands from the sample. Data processing circuitry converts the detected light for the multiple different long pass wavelength bands for the sample into corresponding different long pass wavelength band data sets for the sample.

Spectral imaging apparatus and methods

An optical system is provided for clinical diagnostics that include methods and apparatus for rapidly detecting and characterizing rare circulating cells such as, but not limited to, circulating tumor cells/circulating stems cells (CTC/CSCs) in a biological sample. The sample is processed for analyses, loaded onto a 'capture zone' in the optical system where, and subjected to a two stage optical process for very rapid detection and detailed characterization of detected cells. The detected rare cells are characterized with regards to biomarker profiles using fluorescent tags or chromophores for detection and optical imaging. Isolation of the captured rare cells is anticipated for down-stream assessments including, but not limited to, DNA, RNA, proteomic analyses and culture.

An electrical apparatus comprises a chain-link converter which includes a plurality of chain-link sub-modules each of which is operable to provide a voltage source. The electrical apparatus also includes a switching control unit to control the chain-link sub-modules. The switching control unit is operatively interconnected with each chain-link sub-module by an electromagnetic radiation conduit. The length of the electromagnetic radiation conduit between the switching control unit and at least one chain-link sub-module differs from the length of the electromagnetic radiation conduit between the switching control unit and at least one other chain-link sub-module. The switching control unit is configured to discern a difference in the time taken for an electromagnetic signal to propagate through each different-length electromagnetic radiation conduit to thereby identify the or each chain-link sub-module associated with each different-length electromagnetic radiation conduit.

A method of identifying a faulty sub-module of a chain-link converter is provided, wherein the chain-link converter includes a plurality of sub-modules with each sub-module including at least one switching element and an energy storage device which together are selectively operable to provide a voltage source. The method comprises the steps of: measuring a switching characteristic of each sub-module of the chain-link converter; establishing a switching characteristic signature of the chain-link converter; and identifying the or each sub-module with a switching characteristic that deviates from the switching characteristic signature as being a faulty sub-module.

A method for estimating a parameter includes: generating an optical signal, the optical signal modulated via a modulation signal; transmitting the modulated optical signal from a light source into an optical fiber, the optical fiber including a plurality of sensing locations disposed along the optical fiber and configured to reflect light; receiving a reflected signal including light reflected from the plurality of sensing locations; and combining, in parallel, each of a plurality of reference signals with the reflected signal to estimate a value of the parameter.

A method for estimating a parameter includes: transmitting a control signal to a coherent optical source, the control signal configured to chaotically vary an output of the optical source and generate a chaotically excited optical signal; transmitting the optical signal from the optical source into an optical fiber, the optical fiber including at least one sensing location; receiving a reflected signal including light reflected from the at least one sensing location; and estimating a value of the parameter using the reflected signal.

A method for estimating a distance includes: generating an optical signal having a wavelength that is within a wavelength range, the optical signal modulated via a modulation signal having a modulation frequency; transmitting the modulated optical signal from a light source into the optical fiber, the optical fiber in contact with a moveable strain inducing element located at the position along the optical fiber, the optical fiber including a plurality of sensing locations configured to reflect light within the wavelength range when under strain from the strain inducing element and transmit light within the wavelength range when not under strain from the strain inducing element; receiving a reflected signal including light reflected from at least one of the sensing locations; demodulating the reflected signal with a reference signal to generate reflected signal data; and determining the distance to the position along the optical fiber based on the reflected signal data.

An apparatus for estimating a parameter includes: an optical fiber including at least one core configured to transmit an interrogation signal and including a plurality of sensing locations distributed along a measurement length of the optical fiber and configured to reflect light; a reference optical path configured to transmit a reference signal, the reference optical path disposed in a fixed relationship to the at least one core and extending at least substantially parallel to the at least one core, the reference optical path including a reference reflector that defines a cavity length corresponding to the measurement length; a detector configured to receive a reflected return signal; a reference interferometer configured to receive at least a reference signal and generate an interferometric reference signal; and a processor configured to apply the interferometric reference signal to the reflected return signal to compensate for one or more environmental parameters.

A method of communicating among wireless devices includes providing a frequency hopping schedule to a target device. The frequency hopping schedule includes a sequence of frequencies. Wireless communication synchronization

The present invention is directed to system and method for determining a fluid level. The system comprises a sensing rod assembly comprised of releasably connectable rod segments. Each rod segment carries a processor and a plurality of inductors. Each inductor generates a position signal responsive to a float signal. A float assembly comprises a housing containing a circuit having an integrally formed coil periodically energizable by a processor to emit the float signal. A control assembly receives the generated position signals and determines the fluid level. The method comprises providing releasably connectable rod segments with inductors that generate a position signal responsive to a float signal, determining a sensing rod assembly length, forming the sensing rod assembly, disposing it within a container, providing a float assembly periodically actuated to generate a float signal, generating position signals responsive to the float signal and analyzing those signals to determine the fluid level.

Linear position indicator system and method

A self-powered apparatus includes a solar power cell, a battery, and a load. The load may include one or more load functions performed using power provided by one or both of the solar power cell and the battery. The inclusion of a battery permits the solar power cell to be sized much smaller than if the solar power cell was the only supply of power. A programmable controller selectively regulates power provided to one or more load functions and also selectively regulates whether one or both of the power cell and battery supplies the power. Switching circuitry, controlled by the programmable controller, selectively couples one or both of the battery and the solar cell to supply energy for powering the load. In a preferred example embodiment, the controller couples the battery and/or solar cell to charge a super capacitor, which then is selectively controlled to power the load. The programmable controller determines and prioritizes load function power requirements, and based thereon, determines which load functions will be powered based the priority of the load function requirements and the amount of power that can be supplied by the solar power cell as supplemented by the battery.
