An apparatus and method for mixed-media call formatting. A preferred format for a call can be determined from different mixed media communication formats. The mixed media communication formats can include a text format and an audible speech format. A media format mode signal can be sent or received. The media format mode signal can indicate a preferred format for a call. The call can be connected in the preferred format.

The message origination unit (1034) operates in at least one of a reply and confirmation mode and a originate and request mode to effect a wireless financial transaction using a local area link (924).

Transaction authentication for 1-way wireless financial messaging units

A mass excited acoustic device (1100) includes a soundboard (1102), a pedestal (1104) and a transducer (300). The soundboard (1102) has a predetermined resonance frequency and couples motional energy to a device user. The pedestal (1104) includes a platform (1106) formed for mounting a transducer (300), and a foot (1108). The platform (1106) and foot have an axis extending centrally therethrough. The foot (1108) is contiguous to the platform (1106) and to the soundboard (1102), and is substantially smaller in size than the platform (1106) and separates the platform (1106) from the soundboard (1102). The transducer (300) is coupled to the platform (1106) about the axis and converts an electrical input signal into motional energy generated in a direction parallel to the axis. The motional energy is delivered to the soundboard (1102) through the foot (1108) without substantially modifying the resonance frequency of the soundboard (1102).

A damped resonant piezoelectric alerting device (600) includes a motional mass (130), a damping element (136, 156) magnetically coupled to the motional mass (130) and a piezoelectric actuator (100) which is constrained to an actuator mount (132) at a first end and coupled to the motional mass (130) at a second end. The piezoelectric actuator (100) responds to a control signal (108, 110) to generate an alternating out-of-plane movement (812, 814) of the motional mass (130) at an amplitude (412, 414). The alternating out-of-plane movement (812, 814) of the motional mass (130) is transformed into tactile energy to provide a tactile alert about a resonant frequency (608). The amplitude (412, 414) of the out-of-plane movement (812, 814) of the motional mass (130) is controlled by the damping element (136, 156). The alternating out-of-plane movement (812, 814) of the motional mass (130) is also transformed into acoustic energy to provide an audible alert above the resonant frequency (608).

Damped resonant piezoelectric alerting device

A meter reading device (22) for wirelessly transmitting meter readings from a plurality of meters (30) includes a receiver (44) for receiving a synchronization signal (60), a clock (40) connected to the receiver, a wireless transmitter (46) connected to the receiver for transmitting meter readings in synchronization with the synchronization signal, and a microcomputer (32) pre-programmable to receive meter readings from the meter and to actuate the wireless transmitter at a different specific time for each of the meters. The transmitter transmits a radio frequency signal carrying only meter readings on a reverse channel of a two-way paging system (10) during a particular reverse channel time-slot (90) of a synchronous two-way paging protocol. A messaging terminal (18) of a the two-way paging system transfers signals carrying meter readings, along with time-slot identification, to a meter reading correlator (24) which correlates the signals with each of the meters based upon the time-slot identification alone.

A non-linear reciprocating device (100, 200) includes an armature (12) including non-linear suspension members (14, 16); a compliant contactor (50, 72), coupled to a power source (BT), and further coupled to the armature (12) for generating an interrupting signal; an electromagnetic driver (25), coupled to the non-linear suspension members (14, 16) for effecting an electromagnetic field in response to the interrupting signal; and a magnetic motional mass (18) suspended by the non-linear suspension members (14, 16), and coupled to the electromagnetic field for generating a reciprocating movement of the magnetic motional mass (18) which is transformed through the non-linear suspension members (14, 16) and the electromagnetic driver (25) into tactile energy. The compliant contactor can be either a single pole compliant contactor (50) or double pole compliant contactor (72).

Non-linear reciprocating device

A method and apparatus adaptively selects a communication strategy for communicating a message in a selective call radio communication system including a fixed portion (100) and a portable portion (101). The fixed portion (100) transmits (402) an alert signal to the portable portion (101), and awaits (404) an acknowledgment signal including a signal quality estimate from the portable portion (101). The portable portion (101) receives (602) the alert signal, and computes (604, 606) the signal quality estimate therefrom. The portable portion (101) then sends (608) the acknowledgment signal to the fixed portion (100). In response to the acknowledgment signal, the fixed portion (100) selects (407) a transmission strategy in accordance with the signal quality estimate. For compatibility, the transmission strategy requires a matching reception strategy in the portable portion (101). After sending the acknowledgment signal, the portable portion (101) selects (609) the matching reception strategy in accordance with the signal quality estimate sent in the acknowledgment signal without requiring further communication with the fixed portion (100).

Method and apparatus for adaptively selecting a communication strategy

A satellite communication system (1110) provides geographic protocol conversion for message delivery between communication transceivers (1118, 1118') operating within at least two geographic areas (1116, 1116'). The satellite based communication system (1110) comprises a first communication transceiver (1118) which provides two-way message delivery within a first radiotelephone network (1114) located within at least a first geographic area (1116), the two-way message being encoded in a first predetermined message transmission protocol. The first communication transceiver (1118) further enables two-way message delivery with a communication satellite (1120), the message also being encoded in the first predetermined message transmission protocol. The communication satellite (1120) comprises a satellite transceiver (1312, 1328, 1310), for enabling the two-way delivery of the message encoded in the first predetermined message transmission protocol with the first communication transceiver (1118), and a protocol converter (1314) for converting the message encoded in the first predetermined message transmission protocol into a message encoded in a second predetermined message transmission protocol. The satellite transceiver (1312, 1328, 1310) further enables two-way delivery of the message encoded in the second predetermined message transmission protocol with at least a second communication transceiver (1118') operating within a second geographic area (1116').

Global satellite communication system with geographic protocol conversion

An antenna (10) is described comprising a generally elongate, magnetically permeable core (12) having a major axis, an insulating substrate (20) being affixed to the core (12) along an axis parallel to the major axis, and having at least a pair of opposed spaced conductive runners (21) positioned along the substrate normal to said major axis. A plurality of charge storage devices (16) are secured between the pair of opposed spaced conductive runners (21). An electrically conductive split sleeve (14) is positioned surrounding the core (12), and has first and second edge portions in electrical connection with the pair of opposed spaced conductive runners (21) opposite said charge storage devices (16). Arrangements for mechanically mounting the antenna (10) are provided which are integral to the antenna (10). The mechanical mounting arrangements are separate from the arrangements provided for electrically connecting the antenna 10 to the receiver.

A global communications system is described having terrestrial transmitters for transmitting coded message signals in each of a plurality of geographic areas. The global communication system further includes at least one satellite transmitter for transmitting the coded messages signals in each of a plurality of global geographic areas. The coded message signals transmissions include channel identification codewords identifying the terrestrial channels and the satellite channel. The terretrial channel is selected for operation when the channel identification codeword received matches a first predetermined channel identification codeword. The satellite channel is selected for operation when the channel identification codeword does not match the first predetermined channel identification codeword. When the satellite channel is selected the terrestrial channel is periodically reselected to enable decoding the channel identification codeword received on the terrestrial channel. The terrestrial channel is again selected when the channel identification codeword received on the terrestrial channel matches the first predetermined channel identification codeword.

Global communication system receiver and method for operating the same

An individual desiring to operate a pager via voice commands sends a message to a repository of voice recognition codebooks requesting access to a particular codebook. The repository device(s) respond by transmitting the codebook of that individual to at least one pager, which stores the codebook therein. In a second embodiment, each individual operating a pager by voice commands is provided with a codebook module, which contains suitable memory storage having at least that operator's codebook stored therein. By inserting the codebook module (or card) into the pager, that pager becomes at least partially controllable by the voice commands of that operator. The codebook module may be easily removed to permit the communication device to be rapidly reprogrammed by inserting the codebook of another operator.

Voice controlled pager and programming techniques therefor

A satellite paging system is described for providing geogrpahic protocol conversion for data packet delivery to communication receivers located in a plurality of geographic areas. The system includes a transmitter for transmitting data packets formatted in a first predetermined data format to the communication satellite. The satellite includes a receiver for receiving the data packets and a programmable encoder coupled to the receiver for encoding the received data packets into encoded data packets in a second predetermined data format corresponding to the signaling requirements of each geographic delivery area. A satellite transmitter coupled to the programmable encoder then transmits the encoded data packets in the second predetermined data format to a portable communication receiver, operable in the second predetermined data format in the geographic delivery area.

A paging receiver having acknowledge back capability is provided with the capability to request a received message to be forwarded to an alternate paging receiver in a paging system after having received its address and associated message. The paging receiver includes an entry device for selecting the alternate paging receiver to which the message is further to be sent, and after the selection is made, the paging receiver generates the acknowledge back response requesting the message be further sent to the selected alternate paging receiver.
