A device for introducing and polymerizing polymeric biomaterials in the human body. The device has a first elongate tubular member having proximal and distal extremities and a longitudinal axis. An expansile member is carried by the distal extremity of the first elongate tubular member and is movable between contracted and expanded positions. The expansile member has a predetermined configuration in the expanded position. A deformable membrane covers the expansile member and is sized so as to be capable of overlying and underlying the expansile member in the expanded position. A second elongate tubular member has proximal and distal extremities, a longitudinal axis and a first lumen extending from the proximal to the distal extremity of the second elongate tubular member. The distal extremity of said second elongate tubular member terminates proximal to the distal extremity of said first elongate tubular member and adjacent to said expansile member. The first elongate tubular member is carried by said second elongate tubular member. Light conductors are carried by the second elongate tubular member for conducting light to the distal extremity of the second elongate tubular member.

An endoprosthesis is provided which presents an endoprosthesis body of a plurality of full-circle helical sections exhibiting a repeating pattern of undulations that follow a generally helical axis. Adjacent full-circle windings each have at least one bridging junction joining together apex-like portions of adjacent full-circle sections. In a preferred arrangement, a plurality of these bridging junctions define a substantially in-line helical pattern of bridging junctions along the endoprosthesis or stent. One, two, three or more of these substantially in-line helical patterns can be provided. Also provided is a procedure by which the endoprosthesis or stent is implanted by deployment with a suitable device, the deployment expanding the pattern of undulations in a uniform manner to provide an especially consistent support surface throughout the endoprosthesis.

A catheter and procedure for its use are provided. The catheter includes an elongated proximal shaft that is made of flexible metallic tubing which is an alloy including nickel and titanium as the principal components. The elongated shaft is virtually kink-free when used, the use being at temperatures below the transition temperature or the temperature at which reversion to an austentic state is complete, the temperature being below warm-blooded body temperature. Preferably, a more atraumatic distal shaft is secured to the distal end of the elongated metallic tubing proximal shaft. During use, the catheter exhibits superior torsional strength, is virtually kink-free, and provides enhanced fluid flow due in large part to an exceptionally thin-walled and microbore characteristic of the metallic tubing.

A guidewire, such as for percutaneous angioplasty, having a radiopaque internal corewire and a spring of radiopaque material at a distal tip portion of the corewire. A plurality of alternating grooves and bands are integrally formed from the corewire in a section adjacent the tip portion of the corewire. A plastic sleeve is attached to the corewire around the integral radiopaque bands.

A guidewire is provided for use with medical devices such as catheters. The guidewire has a structure which is particularly suitable for use as a micro-guidewire which is small enough for use even within the cerebral vascular system. The guidewire includes a unitary core wire of nickel and titanium alloy, which unitary core wire has a distal tip portion including a ribbon tip. A coil is positioned generally along the outside surface of the distal tip portion, including the ribbon tip. The distal tip portion of the device exhibits super-elasticity properties by which the tip is easily bent and rebent without kinking.

A balloon catheter system is provided which includes a balloon-on-a-wire assembly and an over-the-wire catheter which slidably passes over the elongated body of the balloon-on-a-wire assembly, but not over its balloon. In the procedure by which the system is used, the balloon-on-a-wire assembly achieves an initial dilation or predilation of a lesion or stenosis, after which it is moved somewhat distally to clear the predilated stenosis. The over-the-wire catheter then is slidably moved over the balloon-on-a-wire assembly until its balloon reaches and dilates the predilated stenosis. After dilation is completed, the system is removed from the body vessel thus treated.
