Pine oil cleaning compositions containing as extenders C.sub.9 to C.sub.12 olefins, C.sub.9 to C.sub.12 alcohols and acetates thereof. The extenders permit replacement of a portion of the pine oil constituents in cleaning compositions while preserving bloom and cleaning characteristics.

Oil is dehydrated and/or desalted by the influence of a dewatering and desalting formulation which can be characterized as an admixture of (i) a demulsifier preferably an alkylene oxide alkyl phenol-formaldehyde condensate such as a poly ethoxylated nonylphenolformaldehyde condensate and (ii) a deoiler which is usefully a polyol such as ethylene glycol or poly (ethylene glycol) of Mw ranging from 106 to 44,000 and preferably ethylene glycol. The aqueous formulation may usefully contain a cosolvent such as isopropanol. The surface active agent composition is admixed with the salt-containing oil which has been emulsified with water, and heated whereby the formulation of surface active agents aids in breaking of the emulsion and transfer of salts to the aqueous phase preferably after passage through an electric coalescer whereby a clean oil product suitable for use in refining operations is recovered with remarkably low oil carry under with the effluent water when ethylene glycol is formulated into the system as the deoiler.

A process for removing suspended solids, particularly difficultly filterable inorganic solids, from an oil obtained as a refinery process fraction from steam and catalytic cracking units, shale oil retorting process fraction, or from coal conversion processes by adding to the oil an agglomerating agent which is a polyelectrolyte, usefully a water-in-oil emulsion of a water-soluble polymer whereby said solids are clustered together into readily separable agglomerates.

Process for the removal of solids from an oil

Very finely divided particulate solids are removed from unconventional whole heavy petroleum crudes, heavy petroleum crude fractions, and residua, syncrudes and syncrude fractions, particularly shale oil and shale oil fractions, by the use of novel surface active agents. The surface active agent is characterized as an admixture of (I) a surfactant comprised of (A) an ethoxylated or propoxylated ester, or ester constituted of a 1,4 sorbitan skeleton to which at least one and up to three ethoxy, propoxy, or mixed ethoxy-propoxy, and at least one and up to three fatty acid substituents are attached through oxygen to the 2,3,5 and 6 carbon atoms; and preferably this compound (A), or mixture thereof, is further admixed with (B) an organo sulfonic acid; and more preferably an admixture of (B) an organo sulfonic acid and (C) an ammonium ion substituted, a substituted amonium ion substituted, or alkali metal substituted sulfonate. In its more preferred form, the surfactant, or admixture thereof, (I) is admixed with (II) a demulsifier which is characterized as an ethoxylated, propoxylated, or mixed ethoxylated/propoxylated phenol formaldehyde resin substituted at a position para to said ethoxy and/or propoxy group, or groups, with a hydrocarboyl group. The solids-containing oil and surface active agent, or agents, are emulsified with water, the novel surface active agents causing transfer of solids to the aqueous phase. The emulsion is preferably contacted in an electrostatic coaleser to coalesce the water and separate from the emulsion and water phases a clean oil product for use in refining operations.

An oil phase of reduced solids content is recovered from the first stage, and in a second stage it is again admixed with water, emulsified, heated, and then passed to an electric coaleser wherein a clean oil product suitable for use in refining operations is recovered.

A surface active agent characterized as an ethoxylated or propoxylated ester, or ester constituted of a 1,4 sorbitan skeleton to which at least one and up to three ethoxy, propoxy, or mixed ethoxy-propoxy substitutent, and at least one fatty acid substitutent is attached through oxygen to the 2,3,5 and 6 carbon atoms. The surfactant is useful for removing very finely divided particulate solids from unconventional whole heavy petroleum crudes, heavy petroleum crude fractions, and residua, syncrudes and syncrude fractions, particularly shale oil and shale oil fractions, by the use of novel surface active agents.

Hydrochloric acid derivatives of cyclic nitrogen compounds in combination with polyalkoxylated fatty acids are water soluble, waterflood corrosion inhibitors, which because of their solubility avoid the potential clogging problems encountered with waterflood corrosion inhibitors of the art which are dispersions.
