A computer system, having a graphical user interface for authoring and playing a multimedia presentation having one or more multimedia events, displays a representation of a story, including a representation of a start position, indicating the beginning of the multimedia presentation, a representation of an end position, indicating the end of the multimedia presentation, and a representation of a unidirectional path line connecting the start position and the end positions. The representation of at least one icon, associated with a source of multimedia material, may be linked to the path line. The link, called a call spot, represents a call to the multimedia, allowing icons to be shared by many presentations or to be shown at different times in the same presentation. The multimedia presentation starts at the start position, plays the multimedia material represented by the at least one icon, and then continues along the unidirectional path line and completes at the end position.

A digital multimedia newsroom production system allows users of the system to create, browse and catalog multimedia assets. The system includes a journalist workstation for accessing multimedia assets stored in a multimedia archive to create a multimedia storyboard of a news story to be broadcast from the system. The storyboard includes frames of video retrieved from one or more sources, and text retrieved from one or more sources or generated by a user of the journalist workstation. In one embodiment of the invention, multimedia data captured by the newsroom production system undergoes a dual digitization process to create a high resolution version of the media data and a low resolution version of the media data. The low resolution version of the media data can be efficiently stored in the system and may be transmitted over a low-bandwidth network to the journalist workstation for use in the creation of a storyboard.

The method and apparatus for generating a reference video sequence of images includes performing a grid analysis of each of the frames of the video sequence, assigning a color value to that frame, calculating the difference in total color value between frames in the video sequence, establishing a threshold value for transitions and dropping those frames whose transitions from frame to frame are below the threshold value.
