A directly compressible non-cariogenic free-flowing lactitol granulate comprising milled lactitol and a physiologically acceptable, binder taken from the group consisting of sugar alcohols, polymerized reducing sugars, alkali carboxymethylcellulose, hydrogenated starch hydrolysate, hydroxypropylcellulose, physiologically acceptable cellulose derivatives, polyvinylpyrrolidone, gum arabic, and other physiologically acceptable gums. The granulate is directly compressible, and manifests the taste profile, metabolic, and non-cariogenic properties of lactitol. In one embodiment, the milled lactitol is present in the granulate in the range of about 70% to about 98% by dry weight and the physiologically acceptable, non-cariogenic binder is present in the granulate in the range of about 2% to about 30% by dry weight. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the granulate consists of 70-98% milled lactitol and 2-30% of a lactitol binder.

Directly compressible lactitol and method

A combination bulk-forming and osmotic laxative is provided by combining a bulk-forming laxative in the form of psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid with an osmotic laxative such as lactitol. The addition of the osmotic laxative to the bulk-forming laxative with a binder solution and subsequent drying produces an improved laxative in granulate form which is directly compressible into tablets.

Combination osmotic and bulk forming laxatives

An improved frozen dessert made without sucrose or corn syrup solids is provided that employs lactitol and hydrogenated starch hydrolysates as the bulk sweeteners. Aspartame, acesulfame K or other artificial sweeteners may be used as an intense sweetener. The formulation provides a taste and texture qualities that are at least as preferable as conventional products sweetened with sucrose and corn syrup solids and further provides hardness, melting and overrun properties that compare favorably with conventional products sweetened with sucrose and corn syrup solids.

Bulk sweetener for frozen desserts

A directly compressible xylitol granulate comprising xylitol and a physiologically acceptable, non-cariogenic binder taken from the group consisting of polymerized reducing sugars, an alkali carboxymethylcellulose and hydrogenated starch hydrolysate. The granulate is directly compressible and exhibits the taste profile, metabolic and cariostatic properties of xylitol.

Directly compressible xylitol and method

A reduced calorie, noncarcinogenic sweetener of xylitol and a reduced calorie bulking agent in a weight ratio of about 4 to about 0.05 based on the dry weight thereof. The sweetener enables the preparation of cooked confections which also retain their stability after processing.

Dietetic sweetening composition

The present invention is directed to edible compositions containing a sweetener combination of xylitol and maltitol. This combination exhibits sweetness synergism. It also lacks the undesired burning aftertaste of pure xylitol, has a substantial cooling effect and avoids set-up problems. The compositions range from confections such as chewing gum, chocolate and hard candy to dietetic foods.
