A film-forming binder polymer for a coating composition such as a paint, varnish or woodstain where the polymer is modified by the presence of bonded moieties derived from plant gum, particularly plant fibre gum obtainable from plant fibre, especially corn fibre gum and more particularly moieties derived from proteo-xylans and/or furanose. The modified binder polymer minimises the need to use coalescing solvents without producing poor dried paint coatings which fail the scrub resistance tests also improves the opacity of the dried coating composition.

Modified binder polymer for coating compositions

A pigmented, aqueous coating composition comprising i) an aqueous dispersion of non-crosslinkable addition oligomer of weight average molecular weight of from 5000 to 15000 Daltons and calculated Fox Tg greater than 0&#xb0; C. and less than 50&#xb0; C. ii) an aqueous dispersion of addition polymer of weight average molecular weight greater than 53,000 Daltons, calculated Fox Tg greater than 10&#xb0; C. and less than 40&#xb0; C. and mean particle diameter of less than 150 nanometers, where the ratio of i):ii) is from 0.25:1 to 2.70:1, based on % weight dispersion solids.

Low VOC coating composition

An autoxidisable architectural coating composition suitable for application to surfaces found in and around buildings at ambient temperatures and in natural daylight wherein surface autoxidation of the composition is promoted by a combination of low concentrations of metal ions (especially manganese or vanadium) and 2,2-dimethoxy-1,2-diphenylethan-1-one as photoinitiator. The composition avoids the need to use more than trace amounts cobalt ions which are rumoured to be carcinogenic yet achieves adequately fast rates of autoxidation. Preferably the use of cobalt is avoided altogether. The use of the low concentrations of the other metal ions reduces discoloration of the compositions often to levels below what is achieved using conventional cobalt promoters. Also a modification in which surface autoxidation is promoted by a combination of 2,2-dimethoxy-1,2-diphenylethan-1-one and trace amounts of cobalt ions in the absence of other surface autoxidation promoting metal ions. Finally, a method for applying the autoxidisable coatings to surfaces under ambient temperatures in which they are subject to natural daylight or similar low energy irradiation is disclosed.

Autoxidisable architectural coating compositions

An autoxidisable architectural coating composition suitable for application to surfaces found in and around buildings at ambient temperatures and in natural daylight by unsophisticated users having no respiratory protection wherein surface autoxidation of the composition is promoted by a combination of low concentrations of metal ions (especially manganese or vanadium) and at least one photoinitiator. The composition avoids the need to use more than trace amounts cobalt ions which are rumoured to be carcinogenic yet achieves adequately fast rates of autoxidation. Preferably the use of cobalt is avoided altogether. The use of the low concentrations of the other metal ions reduces discolouration of the compositions often to levels below what is achieved using conventional cobalt promoters. It also improves gloss. Also a modification in which surface autoxidation is promoted by a combination of a photoinitiator and trace amounts of cobalt ions in the absence of other surface autoxidation promoting metal ions. An aqueous coating composition (especially a paint or varnish for buildings, vehicles, furniture and metal or plastics containers) which can form coatings on surfaces at ambient temperatures which on drying have improved early hardness and tack-resistance. The coating composition comprises water, optionally pigment and other conventional ingredients and dispersed particles of a highly non-crystalline polyester containing repeating hydroxyalkanoate units (preferably 3-hydroxybutyrate or 3-hydroxyvalerate or their copolymers). The polyester is non-crystalline to the extent that at least 60 wt % of the particles have a density of less than 102% of D where D is the minimum density attainable by the polyester. The composition may also contain conventional film-forming polymers of the types used in aqueous paint or varnish.

Aqueous coating composition giving coatings having improved early hardness and tack-resistance

A water-based autoxidizable coating composition for application to architectural surfaces, fittings or furnishings at ambient temperatures which contains water, a drier to promote autoxidation and a water-soluble autoxidizable film-forming copolymer which contains 0.5 to 7 wt % of acrylic acid, 50 to 50 wt % of either a hydroxy acrylate chosen from hydroxy ethyl or hydroxyisopropyl acrylate or alternatively a polyethoxylate (meth)acrylate and 30 to 50 wt % of an autoxidizable ester of copolymerized acrylic acid in which the esterifying moieties are 3-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl or the methallyl analogue. Also an autoxidizable copolymer of the above composition. The coating composition laps well yet is water-soluble and resistant to both long term and short term damage by water. Also the copolymer for use in the compositions.

A water-based autoxidizable coating composition, especially a gloss or partial gloss coating composition (e.g. paint, varnish, woodstain or timber preservative) suitable for application at ambient temperatures which comprises water, preferably organic cosolvent and a partially esterified carboxylic acid film-forming copolymer at least partially neutralized by monovalent cations wherein the copolymer contains added 3-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl groups or certain analogues derived from addition of allyl glycidyl ether or certain of its analogues to carboxylic acid groups, in a copolymeric backbone portion derivable from a prepolymer of weight average molecular weight less than 30 000. The partially esterified copolymer has an acid value of 25 to 60 and preferably a dynamic solution viscosity of 1 to 500 Pa.sec measured in 1-methoxy-2-hydroxy propane by oscillatory parallel plate rheometer. The coatings lap well, dry quickly and achieve acceptable water resistance. Also the optionally unneutralized copolymer and the coating composition when containing a minor amount of particulate copolymer which is found to improve gloss. Discoloration on ageing may be improved by neutralizing with Group 1 metal cations.

Coating compositions which are capable of curing at room temperature comprise (i) a condensation polymer in which the polymer backbone contains at least one grouping of the formula --CO--C(R).dbd.C(R)--CO--, where R is hydrogen, a halogen or an alkyl or aryl group, and (ii) a compound carrying at least three primary amine or thiol groups. The compositions are of particular interest as undercoats in the automobile refinish trade.
