A method and system for tracking the history of possession, activity, and changes related to an electronic document after its creation includes a document in a file system on an computing device having linked metadata which tracks hash values that update when a user performs a document action. Each hash value indicates a fixed document state. The metadata stores hash value identifiers associated with the initial document state and the document state right before the most recent document action and a list of identifiers associated with every state of the document in its history. The method and system allows for branching of multiple documents from a common state, identified by a common hash value and includes components to visualize a document's lineage. The method and system also includes the ability to store information in a document regarding similar, or near duplicate, documents that do not share the same lineage.

A sampler tool for an electronic discovery system implementing an electronic discovery workflow is provided. The sampler tool defines a workflow, identifies, a data set, then calculates results and generates reports and archival records. In particular, the sampler tool calculates and/or obtains various metrics characterizing the workflow and generates reports based on such metrics. These reports can serve as historical snapshots which can be used for quality control purposes and/or to provide support regarding the efficacy of the data selection process or large-scale document review in the context of the electronic discovery process. Embodiments of the invention relate to systems, methods, and computer program products for remotely collecting data stored by a user in one or more network storage areas residing on a network. For example, embodiments of the method involve utilizing a mapping tool to identify at least one network storage area associated with the user, utilizing a collection tool to access at least one network storage area via a network, copying the data stored on the at least one network storage area, and transmitting the data from the at least one network storage area to a collection server.

Embodiments of the invention relate to systems, methods, and computer program products for remotely collecting data from the local storage of a machines. For example, embodiments of the method involve deploying a collection tool to the machine via a network, automatically installing the collection tool on the machine, generating a snapshot of the data, storing the snapshot in a storage area on the machine, and transmitting the data from the storage area to a remote collection server. Because the data is transmitted from the snapshot stored in the storage area rather than from the original data stored on the local storage of the machine, the data may be transmitted to the remote collection server without substantially affecting a user's ability to use the machine and interact with the data stored on the machine.
