The 'RFID Paging Infrastructure' uses RFID technology to provide a low-cost localized message paging system. When a stationary RFID transceiver detects a programmable RFID tag, the transceiver reads an identifier from the RFID tag. The RFID transceiver causes a computer to determine whether a message stored in a database is intended for the RFID tag, and in response to determining that a message is intended for the RFID tag, the RFID transceiver transmits the message to the RFID tag. The message is saved in a memory on the programmable RFID tag. The message in the memory on the RFID tag can be read with a hand-held display device or the RFID tag can be coupled with an integrated display device.

A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer usable program code for location-based tuning for a mobile wireless platform. A current geographic location of the mobile wireless platform is determined on a route being traveled by the mobile wireless platform. Radio frequency conditions are sensed in a path of the mobile wireless platform. Radio frequency conditions are detected at the current geographic location of the mobile wireless platform as the mobile wireless platform travels along the route. An optimal channel is determined for the current geographic location. The optimal channel maximizes communications of the mobile wireless platform based on the radio frequency conditions. The mobile wireless platform transitions channels to the optimal channel in response to determining the optimal channel. One or more wireless devices transition to the optimal channel to communicate with the mobile wireless platform.

Sytems and methods for establising gateway bandwidth sharing ad hoc networks. In a first aspect, a method includes establishing a relationship with a gateway that retrieves data from a remote location and divides the data into at least a first portion and a second portion. The method further includes establising an ad hoc network comprising at least one local lender, receiving the first portion from the gateway via the at least one local lender, receiving the second portion from the gateway, and joining the first portion and the second portion to re-create the data.

Systems and methods for establishing gateway bandwidth sharing ad-hoc networks

An antenna structure capable of determining the direction of a radiofrequency identification (RFID) tag includes a wide-angle antenna disposed within an attenuator that has regions of low attenuation. The attenuator may include a metal plate with holes. In this case, the antenna only detects RFID tags that are aligned with a hole, and hence the direction of the RFID tag is detected. Multiple holes of different sizes can be provided. In this case, if the RFID tag is moving, the direction and speed of movement can be determined from the duration of received RFID signals. For example, a long period of RFID tag signal reception indicates that the tag passed in front of a large hole in the attenuator. The present invention is particularly well suited for use with conveyor belts and in applications where RFID tags move along known paths.
