A mechanism for increasing stiffness of the side-structure of a vehicle, for transferring loads and strain energy, and for improving rigidity from the lower portion of a side pillar, to the underbody structural components of the vehicle. The vehicle includes a hydroformed tube having a horizontal portion, a vertical portion and an arcuate central portion. The upper end of the vertical portion is spot welded to the lower portion of the side pillar. The horizontal portion is received into, and spot welded to, an inner portion of a structural member. The structural member is an L-shaped bracket, and its major portion is spot welded to an inner portion of an elongated beam. The beam is fixedly attached to the side rail of the vehicle. The tubular member, the structural member, and the elongated beam, when connected, form a closed continuous box shaped structure, which reinforces the side-structure of the vehicle.

Hydroformed side pillar to lower back joint structure

A wheelhouse reinforcement bracket provides increased torsional rigidity for the rear wheelhouses of an automotive vehicle. The wheelhouse bracket is positioned in alignment with the location on the vehicle body where the shock absorber is located, and in alignment with the rear suspension cross frame member to create a structural ring formed by the wheelhouse bracket, the C-pillar and the rear suspension cross frame member. The wheelhouse bracket is formed with a mounting flange positionable within the inside of the U-shaped rear side frame rail to facilitate welding thereto instead of being welded to the top of the underbody floor structure. The mounting flange has a first portion configured to be mated against a first generally vertically extending wall of the rear side frame rail and a second portion configured to be mated against a generally horizontally extending wall of the rear side frame rail.

Vehicle cargo load floor with two recessed storage wells

A rear load floor is formed with a first recessed storage well for holding cargo within the rear cargo area of the automobile. A second recessed storage well is formed in the floor of the first recessed storage well to store the spare tire and jack assembly. A removable panel is provided to cover the spare tire recessed well and maintain the integrity of the bottom of the first recessed storage well for the loading of cargo thereon. The second recessed storage well is positioned off center with respect to the longitudinal centerline of the vehicle to accommodate the mounting of the vehicle exhaust system. The first recessed storage well includes a flange located at the conventional load floor position and supported from the rear side rails of the vehicle body.
