A ballast circuit for a fluorescent lamp including a rectifier-filter for coupling to an AC power supply to generate a DC voltage, an oscillator circuit coupled to said DC voltage for developing an RF oscillator signal, and switching signal means for developing concurrent oppositely phased switching signals at the frequency of said oscillator signal to drive series connected power transistors. The common output of the power transistors is coupled to energize a fluorescent lamp coil and regenerative feedback means for generating a signal to aid in switching the power transistors.

Integral crystal-controlled line-voltage ballast for compact RF

In order to mitigate the problem of back-corona discharge in electrostatic precipitators, method and apparatus are provided for energizing the precipitator electrodes with repeated bursts of high voltage electrical pulses, superimposed upon a direct current voltage level. Additionally, the voltage of the pulses in a single burst is increased from each pulse to the next pulse during the time period that the pulse burst is applied. The effect of the ramping of the pulse burst voltage is to increase the average electric field and ion density during the pulse burst. The result is substantially higher particle charging which leads to improved particle charging collection efficiency. Moreover, in addition to eliminating the back-corona discharge problem which particularly occurs in the collection of high resistivity dust particles, the present method and apparatus for precipitator energization achieves the same advantages as so-called board pulse powering precipitator methods, without, however, the concomitant circuit cost associated with high voltage and high power switching devices.

Method and apparatus for ramped pulsed burst powering of electrostatic

An incandescent lamp possessing a ballast circuit comprising a resistor and capacitor in parallel further includes means for interrupting the connection between the ballast and external contacts provided on the base of the lamp. This interruption occurs upon removal of the lamp from its matching socket to prevent the occurrence of capacitor voltage across the external lamp contacts. The circuit is again closed upon reinsertion of the lamp in the matching socket to permit normal lamp operation.

Four switching elements are configured to reduce the voltage of either an alternating or a direct current electrical power source. The present circuit effectively operates like a variable autotransformer when used with a.c. input power. Additionally, when employed with a conventional resistive load, the present invention exhibits a power factor near unity.

Pulse modulated electronic voltage controller with smooth voltage output

A power converter utilizes an inverter operating at a frequency near 30 kHz to produce an RF voltage which is divided by a reactive voltage divider, one portion of the divider including a saturable reactor having a control winding which is driven by a negative feedback current from a level sensing circuit connected to the converter output. DC voltage is provided by a bridge rectifier and filter connected across the saturable reactor. The circuit is especially useful for supplying electrical power efficiently to instrumentation on multikilovolt transmission lines where a transformer cascade is used to conductively isolate apparatus operating at the potential of the transmission line from a ground level power source.

A metal based cookware induction heating apparatus having an improved power supply and control circuit comprised of a chopper inverter including a gate controlled power thyristor coupled to and supplying an induction heating coil with periodic energization currents. A full wave rectifier supplies rectified, unfiltered, unidirectional high voltage excitation potential to the chopper inverter which converts the excitation potential to a comparatively high frequency of the order of 20 kilohertz for supply to the induction heating coil. A gating circuit is provided for driving the chopper inverter directly from the rectified high voltage excitation potential supplied by the rectifier.

An automatic radar jamming transmitter comprising a plurality of voltatuned magnetrons each adapted to be tuned over a prescribed wide range of frequencies, discrete voltage tuning means in circuit with each of said magnetrons respectively whereby each of said magnetrons initially and simultaneously generate radio-frequency energy at prescribed discrete frequencies, means for simultaneously varying said discrete voltage tuning means in a random manner whereby the discrete outputs of said magnetrons comprise simultaneously generated frequency modulated noise signals, means for amplifying said noise signals, and means in circuit with said amplifying means for producing random changes in the amplitudes of said noise signals.

Radar jamming transmitter

1. A frequency diversity radar transmission system comprising a source of curring periodic pulses, a magnetron type oscillator adapted to be voltage tuned for generating continuous waves of radio-frequency energy, means responsive to said pulses for voltage tuning said magnetron whereby the continuous wave output frequency of the magnetron is instantaneously shifted to successive discrete frequencies by successive pulses and the respective discrete frequencies are maintained constant for the period between any two successive pulses, a transmitting antenna, wideband amplifier means driven by the output of said magnetron and having its output coupled to said antenna, and means for periodically energizing said amplifier immediately after each of said successive shifts in frequency whereby radio-frequency pulse energy is coupled through said amplifier to said transmitting antenna only for a relatively small fraction of the period of said recurring pulses, each of the transmitted pulses comprising discrete frequencies.

Frequency diversity radar system

An induction heating unit is provided having an essentially zero stand-by power requirement and comprised by a high power solid-state inverter for supplying relatively high frequency excitation currents to an induction heating coil, and including inhibit, delay, and starting and stopping gating circuits to control the operation of the high frequency power inverter. An induction heating load sensing device senses the presence of a load such as a pan or other metal base cookware located in induction heating relationship with respect to the induction heating coil. The pan presence sensing device comprises a very low power oscillator coupled to a load sensing coil for exciting the load sensing coil with high frequency oscillatory signals which preferably are in the range of two to three times the frequency at which the power inverter operates. The load sensing coil is physically positioned adjacent the induction heating coil in a location to provide inductive coupling of the high frequency sensing signal to a pan load suitably supported near the induction heating coil. The pan load sensing coil is designed to minimize the effect of inductive coupling to the induction heating coil, and for this purpose is provided with a multiple loop figure-eight or cloverleaf shape so designed and positioned that currents induced in the loops of the sensing coil by the magnetic field of the induction heating coil null one another at the terminals of the sensing coil. A load sensing detector responds to the magnitude of the high frequency voltage across the pan load sensing coil and controls the operation of the gating circuits of the power inverter in a load-selective manner to cause turn-on of the power inverter only in the presence of a proper pan load.

A magnetron discharge device for noise generation comprising an elongated cathode, a plurality of spaced anode segments surrounding said cathode to define a cylindrical space charge chamber, and means for establishing a radial electric field between said cathode and said anode segments for imparting an average rotational velocity about the cathode to an electronic space charge when a magnetic field is axially directed through the space charge chamber, said spaced segments and the gaps between them differing in relative widths whereby electrons traveling under different segments and gaps have different transit times.

A voltage responsive switch such as a SUS or PUT or their equivalents is rendered conductive upon the timing circuit reaching a present value and in turn rendered conductive a constant current high voltage switching transistor connected in series with the primary winding of a pulse transformer across the output of the additional low voltage derived from the main full wave rectifier. The pulse transformer in turn has its secondary winding connected to the control gate of the power thyristor included in the chopper inverter.

Low cast chopper inverter power supply and gating circuit therefor

A magnetron discharge device for noise generation comprising an elongated cathode and a plurality of anode segments surrounding said cathode to define a cylindrical space charge chamber, said cathode comprising a helix having a diameter equal to at least half the space charge chamber diameter and having a spacing between adjacent turns equal to at least half the helix diameter.

An induction heating unit including inverter circuit means comprised by a gate controlled thyristor and commutation circuit coupled together in circuit relationship and excited from a set of power supply terminals connected to a source of excitation potential. An induction heating coil is coupled to and excited by the inverter circuit means in a manner such that the loading on the induction heating coil determines at least in part the operating frequency at which the inverter circuit means operates. Gating circuit means comprised by a gating signal generator and enabling circuit means are coupled to and control turn-on of the gate control thyristor with the gating circuit means comprising a feedback sensing circuit coupled to the induction heating coil for deriving a feedback trigger signal synchronized with the frequency of operation of the commutation circuit.
