A microfluidic device includes a substrate and a non-valve capillary mechanism. At least a reservoir and one or more channels leading to the reservoir are formed within the substrate. The non-valve capillary mechanism is within the reservoir, and prevents fluid delivered to the reservoir from wicking from the reservoir into the channels.

An automated assay system includes a platform and a rotatable coupon removably positioned within or on the platform. The rotatable coupon includes a plurality of discrete tracks, each of the plurality of discrete tracks configured to contain microfluidic volumes. At least one magnet is operatively disposed on the platform, the rotatable coupon, or combinations thereof, and the at least one magnet is configured to generate a magnetic field at a predetermined area of the rotatable coupon. A motor is operatively connected to the rotatable coupon.

A microfluidic device comprises a microfluidic coupon and a fluid reservoir associated with the microfluidic coupon. The fluid reservoir has a vented configuration and a non-vented configuration, and is configured to contain a liquid to be centrifugated. An opening is formed in the fluid reservoir. When the microfluidic coupon is rotated at a target rotational velocity: the opening is open to flow of the liquid when the fluid reservoir is in the vented configuration; and the opening is closed to flow of the liquid when the fluid reservoir is in the non-vented configuration.

Representative embodiments provide for a fuel activation device including a fuel storage chamber configured to store a plurality of fuel pellets arranged as a stack. A fuel dispensing device is configured to transport a fuel pellet to a fuel activation chamber. A spring is configured to advance the fuel pellets toward the fuel dispensing device as one or more fuel pellets are removed from the stack. A fuel initiator is configured to activate a release of hydrogen gas from the transported fuel pellet. The fuel activation device is configured to provide the hydrogen gas to a fuel cell through a gas vent. A method is provided including providing a plurality of fuel pellets arranged as a spring-loaded stack, transporting a fuel pellet from the stack, activating a release of hydrogen gas from the transported fuel pellet, and providing the hydrogen gas to a fuel cell.
