There is disclosed an improved coating for an angiographic guidewire and a method of manufacturing the guidewire. The guidewire takes the form of a coiled wire which is coated with copolymers of methylsiloxane and aminoalkylsiloxane units to enhance the lubricity of the guidewire when it is inserted into a catheter.

An endocardial lead which includes an elongated, flexible, insulative tubing, a central flexible conductor positioned within the tubing and having one end adapted to be electrically connected to a pulse generator. A ribbon-shaped bonding member is connected to the other end of the central conductor. The ribbon-shaped bonding member extends through an aperture in the wall of the insulative tubing and is positioned along the outer surface of the tubing. A ribbon-shaped electrode is helically wound around the outer surface of the insulative tubing and positioned over the ribbon-shaped bonding member. With this configuration, a low impedance electrical connection is provided between the ribbon-shaped electrode and the central conductor, and between adjacent turns of the electrode.

The screw-in lead assembly can be connected at its proximal end to an electrical power source and can be connected at its distal end to tissue of a living body. The assembly comprises at least one wire conductor extending within a sheath of material inert to body materials. A proximal end of the wire conductor can be electrically connected to the power source and a distal end of the wire conductor can be electrically connected to a tubular electrode body in an electrode assembly at the distal end of the lead. A corkscrew shaped securing device is received within the tubular body and has a proximal end fixed to a movable mounting member in the tubular body. A drive mechanism in the form of a helical metal ribbon is received within the sheath, extends from the proximal end of the lead to the distal end of the lead, is fixed to the other end of the mounting member and defines a lumen through and in which a stylet can be received. A terminal pin/drive member at the proximal end of the lead has one end thereof connected to a proximal end of the ribbon and the other end thereof extending from the lead assembly. The terminal pin/drive member can be rotated to screw the securing device into living tissue and has a passageway therethrough opening into the lumen at one end and to the ambient environment at the other end.

A cardiac pacer lead which includes an insulated electrical conductor having one end adapted to be electrically connected to a pulse generator and the other end electrically connected to an electrode, and a plurality of tines spaced around the circumference of the insulated electrical conductor and projecting in a direction away from the electrode. A curved, flattened spring is embedded within the insulated electrical conductor in a region on the lead near the electrode to thereby provide a lead of a generally J-shaped configuration. The spring serves to maintain the curved configuration of the lead when the lead is implanted in the heart.

A cardiac lead having ring electrodes positioned at predetermined locations along the length of the lead either for stimulating the heart at various selected locations, or for sensing electrical signals generated at various selected locations within the heart. The cardiac lead includes an insulative tubing having a plurality of pairs of apertures positioned at selected locations along the length of the tubing. A plurality of conductors are positioned within the tubing and extend through respective ones of the pairs of apertures. A plurality of ring electrodes are each positioned to cover a pair of apertures. The ring electrodes are mechanically bonded to the insulative tubing and are electrically connected to the conductors.

The pacing lead assembly includes an electrical conductor, for example, a flexible conductive wire, a terminal electrically connected to one end of the conductor, an insulative coating extending over a major portion of the length of the conductor, and an electrode coupled to the other end of the conductor. The electrode includes a conductive substrate having a smooth surface and being of generally a spherical configuration. The substrate is preferably covered by two layers of woven mesh screen which are bound onto the smooth surface of the substrate to thereby provide an electrode to which tissue from an organ to be stimulated may bond.

A termination for a carbon fiber implantable lead. A terminal assembly includes a hollow terminal member having lateral ports through which carbon fiber bundles pass. Exposed tips of the carbon fiber bundles are folded back and held against the exterior surface of the terminal member by a housing member. The housing member frictionally engages the exposed fiber tips. A stylet entry guide member is frictionally engaged with the interior of the end of the terminal member. One end of the guide member is coupled to a stylet tube which passes through the terminal member and the lead. This configuration provides a good electrical coupling between the terminal member and the carbon fiber bundles, as well as provides an axial passage through which a stylet may be inserted.

A termination for a carbon fiber implantable lead. A tip assembly includes an electrode to which carbon fiber tips are cemented with a conductive adhesive. An outer housing cooperatively interacts with the electrode to mechanically secure the carbon fiber bundle sheathing to the electrode, and also to establish good electrical contact between the carbon fiber bundles and the electrode.
