Provided herein are microbial infection indicator devices, including dressing with indicators, standalone indicator inserts or disks that can be freely placed at a wound site or dressing, and applications thereof for displaying a visible or detectable signal to a user upon detection of an analyte or biomarker indicative of an infection, such as a color change.

Detecting microbial infections in wounds

A method of diagnosis or prediction of infection of a mammalian wound, said method comprising the step of detecting the presence of a cytokine selected from the group comprising procalcitonin, amino procalcitonin (N-ProCT), eotaxin, granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interleukins IB monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), macrophage inflammatory protein-1 alpha (MIP-1a), regulated upon activation normal T expressed and secreted (RANTES) in fluid taken from the wound. Also claimed is the device for use in the method.

An iodine preparation composition suitable for use on wounds comprising an iodide source, an oxidant and a buffer characterized in that the iodide is held separately from the oxidant until the point of use, and that the buffer is capable of maintaining the pH of the composition at between pH 45 and pH 6 so that iodine is generated at a physiologically acceptable dose rate.
